Abstract
Yogācāra Buddhism was formed by the process of conceptualizing the aspects of vijñāna(識) observed through practices and making it a systemic theory. The practitioners expressed what had been observed through practice, which is subjective experience, by language and shared it together. By that process, the contents experienced through practices were rendered into letters and became a systemic theory.
This dissertation is a study analyzing the grounds on which the contents of subjective experience, which was expressed by language, became patterning. I completed the study using a model, termed a 'cognitive-cultural model', which is reconstructed by applying Rindbecks model categorizing the existing theory of religious language to Yogācāra Buddhism. I assured that although it is possible to apply Rindbecks model to Yogācāra Buddhism the model is not applied to it accurately. So I constructed a new model, termed a 'cognitive-cultural model'. As a model, the 'cognitive model' explains that the vijñāna as a subject and an object are formed by the division of vijñāna and the first recognizes the latter. Additionally, the 'cultural model' explains that whether language is consistent with the rule of the community or not determines significance of language and that language changes a subject of language.
Using the 'cognitive-cultural model', I analyze the relationship between the 'social self' and language in terms of four aspects: 1) the 'social self' as a subject of language, 2) the relationship between 'social selves', 3) the relationship between cognitive objects and language, and 4) the influential relationship between language and the 'social self'.
First, I define that the 'social self' as a subject of language is formed by abhilāpavāsanābīja(名言熏習種子), causing the division of vijñāna and the 'social self' communicates with other peoples through the action of common discrimination forming the cognitive object which is expressed by language. Considering whether the cognitive object of the 'social self' can be expressed by language creates a difference between the secular and Tathata, I interpret that Tathata is defined as the region transcending the world of ordinary language because there is no division of vijñāna in Tathata. Next, I clarify that the 'social self' is not an entity and that there is the same claim in the post-structuralism criticism of modern-rationalism.
Second, I interpret the communication between social selves as the process of socialization by abhilāpavāsanābīja. I interpret that the cognitive subject becomes the 'social self' when the cognitive object formed by abhilāpavāsanābīja is expressed by language and shared by peoples. Moreover, I analyze that the social relationship of an ordinary person is basically similar to that of bodhisattva from the viewpoint of the division of vijñāna by abhilāpavāsanābīja, but there is also a difference between them in that the division of vijñāna of an ordinary person results from his desire whereas that of bodhisattva results from his mercy. Next, I clarify that it is possible to communicate with each other due to the traditional values shared by the members of a community and that Yogācāra Buddhism interprets the traditional values by means of the concept of abhilāpavāsanābīja, while post-Wittgenstein interprets these values via the concept of a 'life form'. Regarding anyāpoha theory of post-Indian logician, the viewpoint with which people communicate each other when they use language consistent with the rule of the community means that the significance of language is determined by the rules of the community.
Third, I argue for the relationship between the cognitive object of the 'social self' and language, especially focusing on the problem of objectifying the results of practice and the method of determining the significance of language. First, I interpret the process to theorize the results of practice in that when the cognitive object formed by abhilāpavāsanābīja is expressed by language conforming to the rules of the community, the content expressed by that language is objectified. Post-Wittgenstein theory can be applied here. Subsequently, I interpret the process as experienced by the Buddhist practitioner to be the following: a division of vijñāna → a non-division of vijñāna → a re-division of vijñāna. Additionally, I find that Bodhisattva is able to express his enlightenment by language owing to Hudugji(後得智, meaning wisdom attained later on) as acquired through the re-division of vijñāna. Next, I clarify that the meaning of language in Yogācāra Buddhism, post-Wittgenstein theory and the anyāpoha theory of post-Indian logician is determined not by the correspondence between language and object but by the compatibility between language and the rules of community.
Fourth, I argue for a relationship between the system of language and the 'social self' via two processes. The first is the process through which the system of language is formed by the 'social self'. The second is the process through which the 'social self' is changed by the system of language. I clarify that unlike the theory of Descartes, which explains the formation process of knowledge based on an entity, the system of language in Yogācāra Buddhism is formed by the action of language and the post-structuralist criticism of the entity shares that aspect. Next, I clarify that there is a unique viewpoint of language in which ālayavijñāna is changed by the language which flew from the world of truth in Yogācāra Buddhism. I regard this as the phenomena by which culture, study and virtue expressed by language change the way humans think. Of the three, I interpret the phenomenon by which Bodhisattva's sacred language changes the mind of a sentient being to be the phenomenon by which the 'embodiment of sacredness' of which mankind pursuits universally changes the 'social self'.
As stated above, I suggest the grounds on which Yogācāra Buddhism formed a systemic theory while objectifying the results of practice through an analysis of the relationship between the 'social self' and language in four aspects. Thus far, there have been various paradigms to explain the world. Particularly, post-structuralists interpret the world by criticizing the entity within their paradigm. I consider that Yogācāra Buddhism is also a paradigm with which to explain the world by theorizing the results of practice from the viewpoint of vijñāna. In the same context, I think that the new 'cognitive-cultural model' is a vision that allows one to see the world.
