Abstract
Nongak (農樂) of the Korean-Chinese (朝鮮族 ethnic Koreans living in China) is one of the traditional folk arts of the Korean peninsula, which has been inherited by the land of China as a result of the immigration of
Koreans. This paper first looked into nongak which has settled in China during the immigration period because of the immigrants of various regions in the Korean peninsula focusing on Jilin (吉林) Province Yanbian
(延邊) the Korean-Chinese Autonomous Prefecture․Heilongjiang (黑龍江) Province․Liaoning (遼寧) Province of three northeastern provinces. Also, the paper conducted research into the transitional process and musical characteristics of Nongak of the Korean-Chinese in Yanbian, which was poised as the representative peasant music of the three northeastern provinces.
In the settlement period of the nongak of the Korean-Chinese from the immigration period to the 1960s, nongak of Gyeongsangnam-do (慶尙南道) was introduced to Sinchon (新村), Ando-hyeon (安圖縣) in the Yanbian
region of Jilin Province whereas nongak of Gangwon-do (江原道) was introduced to Dudogu (頭道溝), Hwaryong-hyeon (和龍縣) and nongak of Gyeongsangnam-do was introduced to Nyeongan-si (寧安市) of Heilongjiang Province. Also, nongak was performed in the Korean-Chinese village of Sangji-si (尙志市)
however, it is unclear what kind of nongak it was.
In Simyang-si (沈陽市) of Liaoning Province, nongak of the Daegu (大邱) region, Gyeongsangbuk-do (慶尙北道) was introduced while geolip (乞粒) nongak of Pyeonganbuk-do (平安北道) was introduced to Hwanin-hyeon (桓仁縣), Bongye-si (本溪市). Also, the of Cheollyeong-si (鐵岭市) was confirmed to have been introduced to Chinese society through immigration from the Korean peninsula.
The characteristics of early nongak of the Korean-Chinese in Yanbian, which is the representative nongak of the three northeastern provinces, may be discovered through a comparison of the organizational patterns
and compositional types of nongak of the Sinchon village of Ando-hyeon, which is called the nongak village of Gyeongsangnam-do among immigrants groups in the Yanbian region, the major target region of this
research, and Busan (釜山) Ami (峨嵋) nongak and Jinju (晉州) Samcheonpo (三千浦) nongak of Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. Concerning the characteristics of nongak of Sinchon, Ando, it appoints a person of the highest position in the village as a butler (執事) while including a burden carrier aside from the formation of gaksis (wives) who are equipped with kkwaenggwari (traditional small gong), jing (gong), janggo
(杖鼓, traditional Korean drum), drum and chaesangsogo (small drum) while putting on a conical hat as percussionists in the organization of a nongak band.
In addition, regarding the contents of jisinbalbgi which is performed in village nongak, it is the characteristics of nongak of Sinchon, Ando that
verses are sung with the basic contents of local characteristics attuned to the social background and change in life based on what was inherited from the Korean peninsula. Nongak of Sinchon, Ando has cultural value and meaning in that it has played a role as a central axis that has led the village. In short, nongak which has been performed in Sinchon, Ando from the immigration period to the 1960s may be simple village nongak which is mainly performed by a farmers' cooperative group that is responsible for production.
As the characteristics of the composition of the Korean-Chinese nongak, which has changed from village nongak to the pangut type of banquet nongak of Sinchon, Ando during the 1980s in the transition of nongak of the Korean-Chinese in Yanbian from the 1960s to the 2000s, it is composed of a female drum dance․carrier dance․fan dance․janggo (杖鼓) dance․mask dance․grandmothers drum dance․grandfathers drum dance․childrens drum dance which are not fully included in banquet nongak of
South and North Korea. This is a change from simple village nongak to brilliant banquet nongak along with the inclusion of diverse folk dances and plays owing to the demand of local feasts or celebrative competitions
in China in a situation in which it became impossible for traditional nongak to be consistently inherited.
The musical characteristics of the Korean-Chinese nongak in Yanbian after the 1980s include the following. First, chaegut from 1 chae to 6 chae is based on two types of a rhythmic tune which is a 12/8 beat tune of triple rhythm and 4 beats and 4/4 beats of duple rhythm and 4 beats, while rarely it uses eotmori style rhythm which is performed in Korea. Second, given the change in the speed of the entire chaegut, the
Korean-Chinese nongak of Yanbian features a change in speed such as 'fast-slowly-fast' with a tune which shows the beginning of 1 chae, and 2 chae and 3 chae of fast tune, 4 chae of slow gutgeori rhythm, and 5 chae and 6 chae which are again fast tune. Third, in the performance of the tune, it plays regular, fixed tune repetitively while tune performance of an individual player, which shows off personal competence with free
style variations, can be barely found. Fourth, in the melody performance of saenab (traditional woodwind), which is performed together with chaegut, it uses folk melody more often than improvised melody performance, and as its representative folk song, there are and .
The musical characteristics of dance with nongak which appeared in the transitional period of the Korean-Chinese nongak of Yanbian involve the following. It often employs frequent gutgeori rhythm and slow gutgeori
rhythm in the music of dance with nongak whereas frequent gutgeori rhythm uses the melody of the folk song and slow gutgeori rhythm uses the folk song . In fast rhythm, it is
changed to frequent gutgeori rhythm, heuimori rhythm, and anttang rhythm as its melody is also changed to the folk song or , a creative song of Yanbian
however, in slow gutgeori
rhythm, the folk song is the most often used aside from a creative melody. With the influence of the close connection between nongak of the Joseon people and agricultural life, the folk song was positioned as representative music along with gutgeori rhythm in the Korean-Chinese nongak of Yanbian, which played nongak wishing for a bumper year. Furthermore, the rhythmic tune of kkwaenggwari, which cannot be missed in nongak is a representative
musical instrument which is a must item also in the organization with western musical instruments, and it appears in the performance of rhythmic tune in the dance with nongak works without an exception, and
it is a sangmo (象毛, hat worn by the nongak performers) play which is the most brilliant part in nongak, which accompanies that musical instrument.
While the characteristic of the folk music of North Korea is the emphasis on folk music and rhythm for making music of a national taste, the folk music of Yanbian is also confirmed to have such a purport. The
Korean-Chinese dance with nongak of Yanbian exhibits similar parts in the use of rhythmic tune frequently under the influence of dance with nongak of North Korea.
The Korean-Chinese nongak and dance with nongak of Yanbian has acculturated in two types from the 2000s to the present. Nongak which was inserted in the large scale songs and dance works of the Yanbian song and dance group appears frequently in the climax of the works, and often uses the fast rhythmic tune focusing on heuimori and anttang rhythm. Also, sometimes it introduces new elements such as sword dancing and nanta drums to nongak works
however, kkwaenggwari, saenab, mung sangmo, which may be counted as the symbols of nongak, appear in all nongak works.
Dance with nongak work in the pangut type by the Sangmomu Art Group of Wangcheong-hyeon (汪淸縣) is the remake of stage dance with nongak which is performed as the dancing music accompaniment to western musical instruments or electric music in the appearance of village nongak that holds a entertaining stage attuned to the rhythmic tune of percussion instruments. The characteristics of dance with nongak in the pangut type lie in showing the acrobatics of brilliant sangmo along with the performance of the fixed rhythmic tune of frequent gutgeori, gutgeori, heuimori, and anttang rhythm by performers.
The Korean-Chinese nongak of China began to be distributed centeringon private entertainers who performed nongak during the immigration period, and began to settle and be inherited by the Korean-Chinese
society by being active through the organization of a nongak band in a village unit. Such the Korean-Chinese nongak went through change and advancement from simple village nongak during the early immigration period, to brilliant banquet nongak and to stage dance with nongak and square dance with nongak that enhanced simple village nongak to become artistic. In this way, it has been inherited as nongak in the pangut type which is regaining the appearance of a new type of nongak and simple village nongak which are created by introducing the current new elements.
