- Abstract
- Recently the International Maritime Organization (IMO) assists its members to comply with the Safe Return to Port (SRTP) requirement, which was addressed in the 2009 International Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) treaty. The requirement was prompted by the increasing size of passenger ships and it defines a threshold where ships crew should be able to return to port without requiring passengers to evacuate. In the present study, the 6DOF motion measurement system using the wireless inertial measurement unit (IMU) was developed for SRTP test of a damaged ship. Reliability of the motion measurement system was verified by comparing with the results obtained by the strapdown method and cable IMU in the same test conditions. All the model tests were carried out in the towing tank of Seoul National University. To prevent drift motion of the ship model and maintain the constant heading angle, the ship model was moored by springs fixed on the towing carriage. The 6DOF motion of the ship model in both intact and damaged conditions was measured in head sea conditions. In case of damaged ship, the motion responses were different from those of intact ship because mass distribution of the ship model was changed by water flooded in the damaged compartment. The flooding water in damaged compartment was observed by video cameras and measured by capacitance-type wave height meters. In addition, the mooring forces and moments exerted on the ship model were calculated for CFD validation.
