Abstract
The oxygen-reduction reaction was investigated on gold supported by cerium phosphate in an alkaline electrolyte. The composites with different Au/CePO4 ratios were prepared by co-sputtering. Two-electron reduction of oxygen to hydrogen peroxide has been found with the Au catalysts, while the Au/CePO4 nanocomposite exhibited the four-electron reduction in a same potential region. This enhancement was attributed to the electronic interactions between Au and CePO4, which could be explained by shifting of Au 4f toward lower binding energy. Also, catalytic activity of CePO4 contributed to increase the ORR activity and was confirmed by chronoamperometry. The synergy between Au and CePO4 was unprecedented activity from Au/AlPO4 nanocomposite catalyst.
