특화가로 문화경관 해석 : 서울 신사동 가로수길을 중심으로

Abstract

최근 서울은 도시의 작지만 의미 있는 변화를 보이고 있는 공간들이 늘어나고 있는 추세이다. 외국의 애비뉴(avenue)를 옮겨놓은 것 같은 청담동 거리, 유럽의 여느 거리를 연상하게 하는 신사동 가로수길, 청년문화와 노인문화가 공존하는 종로, 문화와 소비가 역동적으로 뒤섞이는 신촌과 홍대, 학원문화와 소비문화가 세련된 방식으로 만나는 강남역 등 하나의 이미지로 통합될 수 없는 시공간들이 서울에 동시에 공존한다. 과거 명동, 홍대 앞, 종로 등이 주목을 받았다면, 오늘날에 있어서는 삼청동 거리와 도산공원 일대, 그리고 신사동 가로수길 등으로 확산됐다. 그 결과 많은 지역에서 문화적 경관이 특화된 장소가 출현했고, 그 장소를 경험했다는 것 자체가 트렌드가 되고 있다. 본 연구는 도시의 이미지 형성에 중요한 역할을 하는 문화적 특화가로에 대한 관심으로 다음의 질문에서 출발했다. 첫째, 특화가로의 문화는 어떠한 양상으로 나타나는가? 어떠한 요인에 의해 나타나며, 어떠한 과정에 걸쳐 이를 가시화하고 구체화 할 수 있는가? 둘째, 특화가로의 문화요소들은 어떠한 맥락과 공통점을 지녔는가? 어떠한 관계를 맺으며, 그 의미는 무엇이며, 전체에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가? 위와 같은 질문에 대한 실마리를 찾기 위해서는 법칙주의에 의한 범인간적인 해석보다는 상징이나 의미의 해석을 통해 내부자적 관심에 대한 이해가 필요하다. 이는 도시 공간을 단순히 물리적 실체나 토지이용의 유형으로 바라보는 것이 아니라 도시 공간의 공간적 형태에 부여된 의미 또는 문화적, 상징적인 면에서 중요한 역할을 하는 문화경관을 해석하기 위함이다. 따라서 본 연구는 문화경관을 해석하는 방법으로 문화인류학적 접근방법을 채택하여 현대 도시의 문화적 정체성이 반영된 특화가로의 문화경관의 의미를 해석했다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 문화인류학적 지침 하에서 서울 신사동 가로수길을 대상으로 특화된 도시의 가로로서 대상지가 배태하고 있는 문화적 패턴을 시간적 흐름에 따라 들여다보고, 다시금 대상지의 공간적 외부와 내부의 경계를 넘으면서 시선의 흐름에 따라 외부에서 내부로, 객관에서 주관으로, 형태에서 의미로 점점 깊이 들어가 문화경관으로 드러나는 문화적 의미를 포착하는 해석의 방법론을 채택한다. 이러한 연구의 흐름 속에 본 연구의 결과로써 신사동 가로수길의 문화경관에서 도출한 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 현재 신사동 가로수길 일대는 80년대부터 서로 다른 공간의 점유로 이루어진 직접적인 결과이다. 도시민의 자발적 이용이 생활가로, 문화·예술 가로, 최신 트렌드의 상업가로로 변화를 이끌어왔고, 이는 가로의 물리적 공간, 용도, 이용행태에 중첩되어 나타나 가로수길의 문화경관을 형성하고 있다. 둘째, 신사동 가로수길 공간들을 비교적 한정된 영역 위에서 극히 다양한 구성을 보이며, 이들은 각 계층별, 방문객의 취향과 특성 그리고 시간에 따라 공간이 배치되고 구성되는 특정한 패턴을 보여준다. 셋째, 가로수길의 공간은 외부자의 계획·전략에 의해 시작된 것이 아니라 각 공간의 주체들의 욕구와 의도로 변화했다. 그들은 자신의 공간을 구성하는 방식은 공통된 양식이나 물리적 형태로서 본래 그것이 가지고 있는 의미와 목적 이외에도 요구와 기획에 의해서 나타나는 일종의 의식적인 문화경관 패턴이며 독특한 공간의 연원이 된다. 마지막으로, 신사동 가로수길이라는 공간의 문화경관 패턴은 공간을 소비하는 방문객들의 취향과 선택을 통해 확인되며, 형태와 세부적 속성들은 공간적 소비 뿐 아니라 다양한 취향의 소비, 분위기와 디자인 등 문화적 소비의 주요 토대가 되며, 다양한 의미로 받아들여진다. 결과적으로 신사동 가로수길을 대상으로 특화가로의 문화경관 해석을 통해 도출한 본 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 특정 도시 공간의 문화경관은 시간과 기억이 집적된 결과이며, 단순히 표면적인 물리적 형태 뿐 아니라 그 이면을 깊이 보면 사람, 활동, 의미 등의 요소들이 연결되어있다. 즉, 문화경관 전체를 연구하기 위해서는 물리적 이외에도 다른 요소들과의 관계와 맥락을 봐야한다. 문화가 맥락이듯 문화경관도 패턴으로서 하나의 맥락이며, 그러므로 그 맥락 속에서 연구하고 해석해야 한다. 둘째, 이러한 문화경관의 맥락과 관계가 또 다른 패턴을 만든다. 문화경관 패턴은 크게 특정 지역의 문화로 인해 혹은 사회구조로 인해 형성된 관계와 맥락이 반영되어 패턴으로 드러나며, 이는 크게 도시 구조적으로, 작게는 건물의 내·외부 공간으로, 상호적으로는 공간을 바탕으로 활동하는 사람들의 행위와 의미 그리고 목적 등으로 나타난다. 끝으로 본 연구는 사람들을 위한 공간을 다루기 위해서는 우선 그들의 문화와 그들이 만들어낸 공간을 통해서 배워야 한다는 로버트 벤츄리(Robert Venturi)의 말처럼 특정 도시 공간의 문화적 패턴을 연구했다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 하지만 해석학적 방법론이 지니는 한계점이 본 연구에서 드러난다. 이 한계점에 대해 기어츠는문화의 의미구조 뿐 아니라 해석 자체도 늘 완결된 것이 아니라 열려있고 새롭게 변화되는 것이라고 표현했다. 이처럼 본 연구에 있어서 신사동 가로수길 문화경관에서 도출한 이에 대한 패턴과 그것으로부터 도출한 신사동 가로수길 문화경관의 특징에 대한 설명은 완결적이지 못하다. 또한, 연구자의 자의적인 의미부여에 따른 결과의 위험으로부터도 자유롭지 못하다. 그러므로 앞으로 보다 많은 연구를 통해 견고하고 통일된 방법론 마련이 필요하다. 그러나 오히려 이러한 이유로 해석학적 방법론이 가지는 유연하고 풍부한 접근을 시도했다는 점에서 더 큰 의의를 가질 수 있을 것이다. 앞으로도 이와 같은 도시 공간에 대한 문화경관의 관점에서 시작하는 연구는 개별 도시 공간이 갖는 매력 요소를 유지 또는 개선하는데 필요할 것이며, 이는 곧 도심 곳곳에 매력을 잃어가는 공간이 이를 이용하는 사람들의 욕구와 문화경관의 조화를 통해 진화되어 가는 첫 걸음이 될 것이다.

Development of Globalization puts Korea into a new environment. Global movement of information, goods, and population has been increased in multi-level as well as omnidirectionally and quantitatively. While such movement becomes an opportunity to invite various foreign visitors compared to before, the other movement to create the space differentiating with other spaces, that is, the creation into specified street was made. In addition, such change was conducted not limiting the space where the culture in certain area is supplied and consumed into existing restricted area. In the past, Hongdae, Daehakro, and Apgujeong-dong were focused but such focusing area spreads into various areas including the whole Garosugil, Sinsa-dong, which means that Korean popular culture has grown in industrial aspect beyond the stage of self sustainable development. As a result that foreign cultures are introduced with various information methods, direct experiences, and travels and most of people who experienced these can enjoy their desiring foreign culture elements without difficulty, in many areas, there emerged the place which cultural landscape is specified and experiencing such places becomes a trend. However, as recently such importance is emphasized, the study about specified street is concerned. But comparing to such concern and the theory, there is no detailed study about the culture of specific urban space and the meaning behind its shape. This is because in one hand, the function of cultural landscape was ignored and in the other hand, theories to cultural landscape were effective and objective methodology was lack. Ignorance to such cultural landscape and the absence of clear researching methodology incited unconditional preservation or development policy. 'Cultural District' which the features of regional shape were ignored and is processed with general regulation or development policy is a representational case. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to define the relation among shape, space, and culture interpreting cultural landscape by applying ethnographic method. This is not for regarding urban space as a simple physical substance or a type of land use but for interpreting cultural landscape which plays an important role in a meaning given to spatial shape of urban space or in cultural & symbolic aspects.

For this, this study selects the methodology of interpretation that looks into cultural pattern which subject site as a speicified urban street subjecting on Garosugil, Sinsa-dong according to temporal flow under ethnographic instruction and captures the cultural meaning which crosses the boundary between spatial inside and outside of subject site, digs from outside to inside, from objectivity to subjectivity, from shape to meaning according to the flow of one's view, and then is revealed as cultural landscape. According to such methodology, the interpretation of cultural landscape is divided into four stages as followings and is organized through the work which meaning system being inherent in cultural landscape in a position of insider. First, search cultural & geographical origin of subject site indicated as a differential space with other spaces. This is regarded as a first stage to lead this study into the interpretation of cultural landscape as an origin of unique space. Second, consider various spaces indicated from subject site and explore the part which applies the various spaces as a pattern of cultural landscape. This analysis will obtain the utility by finding cultural sign revealed from the course which space changes and by interpreting the relation between space, subject, and time. Third, consider the method dimensionally which each space is organized as a pattern of cultural landscape. In here, we consider the relation between spatial subject and the shape which is changed and newly organized by intentional plan of subjects and collective demands and is revealed as a cultural landscape. Finally, search the producing method of cultural landscape which spatial subjects implement within subject site and its meaning.

As a result of this study in the flow of such study, the conclusion induced from a cultural landscape of Garosugil, Sinsa-dong is as follows: First, the whole areas of current Garosugil, Sinsa-dong is a directional result consisting of occupation of different spaces since 1980's. Voluntary use of citizens has lead the change into living street, culture & arts street, and commercial street with latest trend, which is indicated to physical space, use, and usage of street by overlapping and creates a cultural landscape of Garosugil. Second, spaces in Garosugil, Sinsa-dong show very various organizations above relatively limited area and they show a specific pattern which space is located and organized according to tastes & characteristics of visitors and time. Third, the space of Garosugil is not started by plan & strategy of outsiders but is changed by desire and intention of subjects of each space. The method that they organize their own space is a kind of conscious pattern of cultural landscape indicated by demand & pland as well as meaning & purpose which originally the space had as a common style or physical shape and becomes an origin of unique space. Finally, a cultural landscape pattern of space as Garosugil, Sinsa-dong is verified by tastes and selections of visitors who consume the space. Also, its shape and detailed properties become major foundation of cultural consumption such as various tastes of consumption, atmosphere, and design as well as spatial consumption and is accepted as a variety of meanings.

As a result, the conclusion of this study induced through cultural landscape interpretation of specified street subjecting on Garosugil, Sinsa-dong is as follows: First, cultural landscape patterns are all connected. Even though elements which seem to be relevant or irrelevant superficially, when looking into its hidden side closely, it seems to know that its patterns are connected. That is, in order to study the whole of cultural landscapes, the relation of pattern and context should be considered. As a culture is a context, cultural landscape is one context as a pattern. Therefore, this must be studied and interpreted in contexts. Second, context and relation of cultural landscape create another pattern. Cultural landscape pattern is revealed as a pattern reflecting relation and context which is created largely due to the culture of certain region or social structure. This pattern is indicated as a urban structure largely, as spaces of building inside & outside in small scale, and as behavior, meaning, and purpose of people who act based on space in mutual aspect.

Finally, this study has the meaning in which it has researched cultural landscape of certain region based on diachronic/synchronic observations like a saying of Robert Venturi, 'in order to deal with the space for people, we have to learn by the space which they and their culture created'. However, the study about interpretation of cultural landscape which is a key purpose of this study is recognized its necessity in various fields but its unified methodology is not existed yet and there is a limit of conclusion which methodology of interpretation has and it is not complete. But rather with such reason, it can have larger meaning in which it tried flexible and abundant approach which interpretational methodology has. In future, the study starting from the viewpoint of cultural landscape to such urban space will be needed to maintain or improve attractions which individual urban space has, which will be the first step that the space which lose its own attraction is evolved through the harmony between desires of people who use this space and cultural landscape in everywhere of downtown.
