Abstract
Debris flow, usually triggered by rainfall, is a fast movement of solid-water mixture. Recently, rainfall intensity persistently increases because of climate change, and thus debris flow occurrence also increases along increase of rainfall intensity. Therefore, estimation of debris flow behavior is important for hazard assessment and design of protective measures against debris flow. One of flow behavior used in hazard assessment is flow velocity, that is usually introduced to estimate deposit area and impact force. This research conducted debris flow experiments using the flume for analyzing debris flow behavior depending on flume slope and viscosity of debris mix. The specific objectives of the study ware to calculate flow resistance coefficient using flow velocity estimation equation and validate the derived flow resistance in simulated debris flow behavior.
As results of debris flow experiment, flow velocity increased and flow depth decreased as flume slope increased. High viscous debris flow shows slower velocity than low viscous debris flow. Flow depth, however, did not show significant difference between two types of debris flow.
As results of estimating flow resistance coefficient, apparent viscosity (μ, 0.5054 Pa s) and lumped coefficient depending on grain size and grain concentration (ξ, 2140.13 m-1/2 s-1) were not significantly different. Manning coefficient, Chezy coefficient, and Koch (1998) empirical coefficient were significantly different between high and low viscous debris flow. Mean of n, C1, and C2 were 0.0282 m-1/3 s, 18.4401 m1/2 s-1, 5.1244 m0.78 s-1 in high viscous debris flow type and 0.0282 m-1/3 s, 18.4401 m1/2 s-1 5.1244 m0.78 s-1 in low viscous debris flow type.
Comparing calculated flow resistance coefficients of this research to real debris flow cases and other debris flow experiments, flow resistance coefficients and flow depth had a power law relationship
μ, ξ, n, C1, and C2 was relative to h1.5729, h-1.018, h0.1847, h-0.018, and h0.1986. Showing extremely low sensitivity to flow depth, C1 was regarded as an appropriate coefficient for application in real debris flow cases.
