여성 보디빌더의 몸에 대한 해석적 접근

Abstract

몸은 무한한 가능성을 지니며 다른 환경이나 사람에 의한 대상으로 여겨질 수 없다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 오늘날 많은 여성들은 미디어와 같이 보이지 않는 문화적인 권력에 의해 종속되어 있다. 이들은 날씬하고 마른 몸을 이상적인 몸의 기준으로 삼아 주체적인 몸(the Subjective Body)보다는 객체화된 몸(the Objectified Body)을 선호한다. 이러한 현상은 여성들의 몸을 끊임없이 억압하고 소비하게 하며 몸에 대한 본질적인 의미와 새로운 가능성을 상실시킨다. 하지만 대부분의 여성 보디빌더들의 경우, 일반 여성들과는 달리 사회에서 여성들에게 지배적인 영향력을 행사하는 날씬함에 대한 이상과 경쟁하며 자신들만의 주체적인 몸을 회복하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 여성 보디빌더들이 자신의 몸에 대해 가지고 있는 주체적인 몸인식을 분석함으로써 여성의 몸에 대한 다양한 시각을 제공하고, 여성의 객체화된 몸의 주체성을 회복하기 위한 방안을 제시하는데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 최소 5년 이상의 경력과 입상 경험이 있는 여성 보디빌더 6명을 연구 참여자로 선정하였다. 연구 자료는 2012년 7월부터 2013년 2월까지 실제면담을 통해 수집하였으며, 해석적 분석을 실시하여 다음과 같은 결과를 도출하였다. 첫째, 연구 참여자들은 소통하고 체험하는 몸을 통해 자신들의 주체적인 몸을 인식하였다. 연구 참여자들은 보디빌딩에 참여하면서, 지각하고 지향하는 존재로서의 몸을 통해 세상과 소통하는 주체적인 몸을 인식하였다. 또한 변화된 자신의 몸을 통해 여성의 몸이 지니는 새로운 가능성과 한계를 인식하게 되었다. 둘째, 연구 참여자들은 여성들의 객체화된 몸에 대해 마른 것에 집착하는 몸, 획일적인 몸, 그리고 건강이 결여된 몸으로 인식하였다. 연구 참여자들은 일반 여성들이 대중매체의 영향으로 인해 다이어트에 대한 집착하게 되고 연예인들의 몸을 갈망하며 신체적으로 허약한 객체화된 몸을 갖는 것으로 인식하고 있었다. 셋째, 연구 참여자들은 주체적인 몸과 객체화된 몸에 대한 인식의 차이에 갈등, 타협, 그리고 무시의 방식으로 대응하였다. 연구 참여자들은, 전통적으로 근육이 남성들의 영역으로 여겨지는 문화로 인해 갈등하였고, 선수 입장으로서 근육 있는 몸을 가지고 있다는 것과 타협하였다. 또한, 연구 참여자들은 시간이 지남에 따라 자신들에 대한 주변인들의 시선이 긍정적으로 변화하는 것을 경험하면서 주변 시선들을 무시하게 되었고, 이러한 과정을 통해 자신들의 몸에 대한 주체적 인식을 확고히 하게 되었다.

The body has infinite potential and cannot be regarded as an object by a certain environment or person. Nevertheless, many women today are subordinate to invisible sociocultural power such as the media. By adopting a slim and thin body as the standard for an ideal body, they prefer the objectified body to the subjective body. This phenomenon consistently oppresses and consumes the female body and causes a loss of the essential meaning and new potential with regard to the body. However, most female bodybuilders, unlike ordinary women, are competing with the slimness that exerts a dominant influence on women in society and endeavoring to recover their own subjective bodies. Accordingly, by analysing the subjective body perception that female bodybuilders have concerning their own bodies, this study offers a diverse perspective on a female body and has purpose in proposing a way to restore the subjectivity of the objectified female body. Therefore, this study chose 6 female bodybuilders that have experience of at least 5 years of professional career and award winning as research participants. Research data was collected through actual interviews from July 2012 to February 2013 and derived the following results through an interpretative analysis. First, research participants perceived their subjective bodies through a communicating and experiencing body. While participating in bodybuilding, research participants, through the body as a perceiving and aiming being, perceived a subjective body that communicates with the world. Furthermore, through their transformed bodies, they perceived the new potential and limitations that a female body possesses. Second, research participants perceived the objectified female body as a body that is obsessed about slimness, is uniform, and lacks health. Research participants, as a result of media influence, perceived ordinary women to have an objectified body that is obsessed about dieting, aspires after the celebrities bodies, and is physically weak. Third, research participants responded to the perception gap concerning the subjective body and objectified body by means of conflict, compromise, and neglect. Research participants engaged in conflict due to the culture in which muscles are traditionally considered as a male territory and compromised that they possess a muscular body as an athlete. Moreover, as research participants experienced a positive change overtime in the perspectives regarding them of the people around them, they came to neglect the peoples perspectives, and, through this process, consolidated the subjective perception concerning their bodies.
