Abstract
This study defined the managerial competencies perceived as essential by sport managers in Guatemala, and determined differences regarding sex, location, level of education, level of management, and type of organization.
A questionnaire was developed through a four-step methodology using an extensive review of previous studies, previous instruments, and international sport management programs. Sport management practitioners, university professors, and members of the Latin American Management Association integrated the expert panel used their professional criteria to validate the questionnaire. Internal reliability was also confirmed using the Cronbachs alpha coefficient (0.95). In total, 216 managers from the three main sport organizations of the federated sport in Guatemala were surveyed. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) revealed a six-factor model comprising 24 items. These six factors were labeled as: (1) Sport facility management, (2) marketing & financial management, (3) strategic planning management, (4) event management, (5) human resources management, and (6) research. T-test and one-way ANOVA analysis were performed to find significant differences between competency factors and the variables of location, level of education, level of management, and type of organization. No significant differences were found when analyzing sex.
