Abstract
This research aims to describe my artwork in which the characteristics of routinized space are expressed via emotive expressions, and look into the development of my interest in space and emotions. The subject matter in my paintings is objects and landscapes that can be often seen in daily life. I wish to capture the characteristics of the space hidden behind the seen landscapes via using the ordinary and trivial objects. One can experience emotions such as comfort and discomfort, familiarity and unfamiliarity, all within one space. I believe that such emotions are not personal or short-termed, but rather induced by the spaces certain characteristics. I am to understand such characteristics of daily spaces through the experienced emotions.
The reason why I became interested in such topics was because of my experience in Seoul: the space of urban traits as well as my routine space. I often experience numbness in the surrounding spaces, and sense of alienation due to the closely un-relatable spaces. Such experiences are based on the fact that the distance between space and individual fluctuates. The spaces in cities frequently change and similarly repeat, therefore the distance between space and individual also constantly shifts. Furthermore, city spaces include structures that keep individual and private spaces such walls and fences, and these divide the spaces into many dimensions. An individual feels comfort within his or her private space, but feel alienated outside those spaces.
Spaces are combination of empty areas and physical structures
one must pay attention to many senses including sight in order to be immersed in spaces. I focus on sounds, colors and minor events as I walk and observe in various spaces, then transform the sensual and the emotional into visual imagery.
This research can also be a study of how emotional experiences can be induced through visual elements. My artwork reflects on the cognitive change towards a space through emotional experience whilst the figurative characteristics remain unchanged in the space. The real space is changed, and such changes are carried out by substituting the original color, deleting the depth in space, or removing any implication that an event could happen in the space.
The overall expressive method was to choose a specific color to direct certain atmosphere. Colors associate sensual experience such as temperature and touch, as well as strong past memories related to the color. I saw that such characteristics of color suggest emotional atmosphere and therefore I researched the possibility of emotions enticed from colors such as artificial and natural objects, loudness and quietness by positioning them accordingly. Furthermore, the coloring method accentuating the canvas flatness reveals the quality of spaces that seemed only shallow and immaterial. The spaces concrete form is obscured, resulting in the space looking similar to an illusion or disappearing space. Another method to emphasize the flatness of the canvas is to repeat a certain unit of space or divide the space
this is to convey the repetitive and divisive qualities in urban environment. I also exclude any figures or element that hints movement from the canvas. This guides the viewer into thinking that he or she is alone in the painted space and directs the viewers attention to the subject I paid attention to. I then relate my sense of alienation with the viewers and also the shift of attention is revealed in the making process.
The senses and emotions experienced when viewing the work is important in my work
it is the process of observation—reinterpretation—visualization. I have become to observe surrounding spaces more carefully and understand the identity of the space where I am in. This research discusses the observation of routinized spaces and the visualizing method of the space-emotions. Additionally, I sought to find out how ideas can be earned through trivial, everyday things and look at them in new perspective. This research also is to explain how expression of emotions, which are often considered private and subjective, can be compressive depiction of present life.
