가역 구조(Reversible Structure)의 금속 기물 및 장신구 연구

Abstract

이 연구는 하나의 사물을 다각도로 활용하거나 감상하고자, 하나의 구조 안에서 두 가지 이상으로 변화하는 조형언어를 가진 공예품을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 진행되었다.

작품 제작에 앞서 조형작업의 형태를 변화시킬 수 있는 방법들과 선행 연구를 살펴본 후, 연구자는 가역 구조(reversible structure)를 가진 형태에 주목하여 사물의 양면을 모두 정면으로서 감상할 수 있는 방법을 연구하였다. 이는 형태를 전환하여 기물의 바닥면이나 장신구의 뒷장식과 같이 사용되지 않는 면, 감상에 있어 배제되는 구성 요소들에 선택적으로 정면성을 부여하는 방식이다. 여기에는 형태 자체를 조작하는 경우뿐만 아니라, 실제로 형태 자체가 변하지는 않더라도 사용자의 시각에서 정면에 해당하는 면이 바뀌는 경우도 포함된다.

연구 작업은 담다와 착용하다라는 공예품의 두 주요한 기능을 다루며, 이를 바탕으로 연구 작품은 용기(container)와 장신구(jewelry)로 나뉜다. [작품 1], [작품 2]는 담는 면과 받치는 면을 뒤집어 양면으로 사용할 수 있는 용기 시리즈이다. 기벽에 바닥면이 고정되는 위치와 그 형태를 다양하게 조합하여 양면 용기의 기본형을 제안하였다. [작품 3], [작품 4], [작품 5]는 가역 구조를 장신구에 적용한 경우로, 구성 유닛의 앞뒤를 뒤집어 형태를 부분적으로 바꾸거나, 의복에 닿는 착용면과 정면을 전환할 수 있도록 제작하였다. 유닛 연결시 경첩, 띠 연결구조(Jacops ladder structure), 자석 등을 활용하여 장식적 요소의 전체 혹은 부분을 회전시키거나, 착탈식 잠금장치를 사용하여 양방향 변환에 수반되는 기술적인 문제를 해결하였다. 또한 판금, 각접기 등의 금속공예기법과 도금, 아크릴 염색, 전통 옻칠 등의 표면처리기법을 응용하여 형태 및 색채의 다양한 변화를 시도하였다.

정리하면, 연구자의 작업은 첫째, 완전히 연결된 하나의 구조 안에서, 둘째, 가역 구조(reversible structure), 즉 양면 활용이 가능한 뒤집기(to make reversible form)라는 변화방법을 적용하여, 셋째, 가변적인 형태를 시도했다는 특징을 가진다.

이렇게 제작한 양면 구조의 작업은 뒤집는 행위의 전후에 구성요소의 재구성 및 기능이동이 일어나 사용자가 스스로 사물에 내재된 조형미를 이끌어내도록 한다. 즉, 사용자는 자신의 미의식이 반영된 제2, 제3의 완성형을 만들고 사물을 보다 능동적으로 사용하는 경험을 통해 사용에 있어서의 세계관을 넓힐 수 있다. 이 연구가 현대 산업사회에서 금속공예분야가 보여주는 제작목적 및 방식의 다양화 현상에 새로운 접근법을 제시하고, 나아가 표현과 쓰임의 영역을 확장하는 데 일조하기를 기대한다.

This study began with the question of one object having multiple perspectives, and one single structure withholding two or more forms, suggesting diversity in a craftwork.

By focusing on reversible structures, this researcher studied ways to transit three-dimensional works into multiple forms. She aimed to do so by making sure all sides of the works - the bottom of an object, the back part of a jewelry - that dont usually serve as the main parts of the display to have an importance by shifting its forms and shapes. This happens not only by physically altering the formation of a work, but also by the front side changing its perspective due to the wearers point of view on the piece.

The study discusses the significance of serving and wearing in relation to craft, and explains this in two parts - container and jewelry. [Works 1], [Work 2] is a series of bowls that can be put on both sides for their usages. The walls of the container and various bottom designs were attached for containers ambivalent utilization. [Work 3], [Work 4], [Work 5] applied reversible structure in jewelries to modify each units surfaces to partially change the figure of the jewelry pieces or to change the frontal side of the jewelry, when on clothes. To connect the units, Jacops ladder structure, hinge, magnets, and other techniques were used to rotate and remove parts of the jewelry. Various metal plates and folding techniques were used alongside acrylic and Ottchil coloring to manipulate the surface and color of the objects.

This researchers works represent three main objects dealt in this study. First, to have a completely unified structure

second to have reversible structures to make reversible forms

and third, to have and withhold various forms and shapes.

These reversible works encourage the users to extend the objects aesthetic values by personally moving, changing, and altering them. The wearers and the users will therefore be able to create numerous figures and forms according to their tastes and values, which enable them to experience new understanding of how to use a single object in multiple ways. This study aims not only to develop the field of contemporary metalwork by expanding the use and looks of the objects in various perspectives, but also to build up new understanding of expressing and using these objects by the consumers.
