Abstract
The Sun is a unique star in the universe in that we can see the surface activity in detail. The Sun presents a rich variety of dynamic activities and heating phenomena in a broad range of timescale and spatial dimension from small-scale transiently enhanced brightenings to large-scale solar eruptive events. It is widely believed that magnetic fields in the Sun play a key role for the solar activities. The regions of the strongest magnetic fields on the solar surface are sunspots that appear darker than the surrounding regions in the photosphere. The recent high-resolution observations of sunspots revealed fine-scale magnetic structures, such as umbral dots and light bridges, and the associated activities, such as small-scale plasma ejections and brightenings in the solar atmosphere. In this thesis, I have investigated the physical nature and origin of the dynamic activities and heating phenomena in the solar atmosphere associated with such fine-scale magnetic structures in and around sunspots. I focus is on the chromospheric phenomena above light bridges and the coronal loop heating for which we could obtain high-resolution spectral data with the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph installed at the 1.6 meter New Solar Telescope (NST) of Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) and the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS).

The major achievements of this research are summarized as follows. First, I investigated the physical property and origin of arcsecond-scale plasma ejections (1.7 arc) seen in the chromosphere above a light bridge. Utilizing the high-resolution spectral data of the Ca II and Hα lines taken with the FISS installed at the 1.6 meter NST of BBSO, I found clear observational evidence for upwardly propagating shock waves that manifest themselves as fine-scale plasma ejections in the chromosphere above the light bridge. From the TiO image, I also found a magnetic flux emergence in the light bridge that appears in the form of the fine-scale photospheric feature (1 arc) diverging with a speed of about 2 km s-1 two minutes before the plasma ejections. As a response to the plasma ejections, the corona displayed small-scale transiently enhanced brightenings.

Second, I investigated transiently enhanced brightenings above a light bridge using the NUV and FUV spectral data taken with the IRIS. The enhanced bright features were mainly observed along the light bridge and have strong upward motions of about 24 km s-1. These brightenings showed broad emission spectral profiles in the Mg II, C II, and Si IV lines, and fine temporal structures suggestive of the elementary bursts on the timescales ranging from a few seconds to less than 1 minute. Interestingly, the neighborhood of the light bridge in the sunspot umbra was also affected by the transient brightenings in the light bridge. Shock waves were found to be impulsively excited there, when the brightenings in the light bridge reach a significant level.

Third, I studied transient brightenings of a small coronal loop and the associated fine-scale magnetic discontinuity detected in the photosphere. From the high-resolution spectropolarimeter data taken with the InfraRed Imaging Magnetograph (IRIM) of the 1.6 meter NST of BBSO, I could detect a narrow lane of intense horizontal magnetic eld representing a magnetic discontinuity around a pore. The horizontal field appeared as a dark lane partially encircling a pore in the continuum image, and was located near one of the footpoints of a small coronal loop that experienced transient brightenings. The horizontal field strength gradually increased before the loop brightening, and then rapidly decreased in the impulsive phase of the brightening, suggesting the increase of the magnetic non-potentiality at the loop footpoint and the sudden release of magnetic energy via magnetic reconnection.

These results suggest that magnetic reconnection in the low chromosphere play an important role for the dynamic activities and heating phenomena in the solar atmosphere. Magnetic reconnection between emerging flux inside the light bridge and adjacent umbral magnetic field can disturb the local low chromosphere. The disturbance then generates acoustic-waves, which soon develop into shock waves. The shock waves manifest themselves as the fine-scale plasma ejections and transient brightenings above the light bridge. Such dynamic phenomena in the chromosphere can contribute to the excitation of shock waves in the neighboring regions of the light bridge, i.e., sunspot umbrae. It is concluded that the dissipation of the mechanical energy in the shock waves should be important in the local heating of the corona.

The outputs of the present research provide a better understanding of the nature and origin of the dynamic activities and heating phenomena of the solar atmosphere associated with fine-scale magnetic structure in and around sunspots.
