아키비스트의 시대적 요청 : 실천적 아키비스트

Abstract

이 글의 목적은 전통적인 아키비스트의 영역을 사회·문화적으로 확장하여 한 사회의 가치 실현과 시대적 요청에 조응하는 보다 적극적인 역할에 관해 실천적 아키비스트 개념을 중심으로 살펴보는 것에 있다. 다원화된 민주 가치를 반영하는 기록학 패러다임 변화는 국가 권력과 행정조직에 기반한 공공부문의 기록관리가 일상과 대중, 지역과 공동체, 기억과 정체성 등을 아우르는 민간 영역으로 확대되고 있음을 나타낸다. 1970년 하워드 진이 발표한 실천적 아키비스트는 거대한 역사의 흐름에서 외면되어 온 개개인의 삶과 시민사회의 다양한 계층을 반영하는 기록을 수집해 아래로부터의 기록화를 수행하는 전문가이자 지식인으로써의 힘과 역할을 강조한다. 이 개념은 기록의 불편부당한 보관자라는 전통적인 역할과 기록관리 과정에 개입하여 사회 현상을 인식하고 그에 참여하는 역할의 대립 속에 수동성과 능동성, 객관성과 주관성 사이를 넘나드는 쟁점을 형성한다. 이 글에서는 아키비스트와 역사가의 경계, 수집·평가의 주체, 기록과 권력 구조의 세 가지 영역을 통해 그 쟁점과 시사점을 추적하였다. 최근 주목받고 있는 공동체 아카이브는 실천적 아키비스트의 지향을 반영하며 실천적 아키비스트의 필요성과 구체적 활동의 가능성을 보여준다. 나아가 우리 사회에 필요한 실천적 아키비스트의 성격과 역할을 새로이 요청되는 아키비스트의 덕목으로써 중재적 전문가, 학제적 연구자, 민주적 가치 실현자의 세 가지로 제시하였다. 이는 실천적 아키비스트 개념이 본래 출현한 맥락으로부터 제기된 한계에서 그치지 않고 우리 시대에 필요한 아키비스트의 다양한 모습중 하나로 발전할 수 있음을 보여준다. 본 논문은 이제껏 제도권과 민간·공동체 아카이브, 시민 사회의 현장에서 적극적인 활동을 수행해온 혹은 앞으로 필요한 아키비스트의 역할을 실천적 아키비스트라는 개념적 토대로써 뒷받침하기를 시도하였다는 의미가 있다. 한 사회 안에서 아키비스트의 존재가 무엇인지 왜 아키비스트가 필요한지 그들의 가치가 무엇인지의 근원적 고민으로부터 실천적 아키비스트를 재조명해보고 그것이 아키비스트의 사회적 필요와 시대 발전을 지지하고 상호작용하는 모습을 찾을 수 있었다. 앞으로 기존의 아키비스트뿐 아니라 공공기관과 행정기록에 집중되어 주목받지 못한 변방의 활동가들, 나아가 현재 아키비스트가 되기를 희망하는 학생과 연구자들 사이에서 활발히 논의될 수 있는 하나의 실천적 역할 담론으로써 연구될 수 있기를 기대한다.

This paper aims to expand the traditional area covered by archivists to social and cultural areas, and to examine the concept of the activist archivist as a more positive role player who helps realize social values and address the needs of the times. A paradigm shift in archival science to reflect the diversified democratic values indicates that archiving in the public sector based on the state power and administrative organizations is expanding to the private sector with respect to routines and the general public, regions and communities, and memories and identities. Howard Zinn proposed the concept of the activist archivist in 1970 and his/her principal role and power as an expert and an intellectual who should gather records of individuals lives and the history of diverse classes in civic society-estranged from the gigantic flow of history-and perform archiving from the bottom of our society. This concept has elicited arguments hovering around the activist archivists passivity, activity, objectivity, and subjectivity amid the confrontation between his/her traditional role as an impartial and independent keeper of records, and his role in the archiving processes, in recognizing social phenomena, and in engaging them. This article traces these arguments and implications in three areas: the borderline between an archivist and a historian, the collector and appraiser, and the archiving and power structure. The recent attention-drawing community archive reflects the activist archivist-oriented pursuits and yet shows the necessity of the activist archivist and his/her possible specific activities. Furthermore, the virtues of an activist archivist who fits the character and role required of these times are offered with respect to the activist archivist as a mediating expert, an interdisciplinary researcher, and a realizer of democratic values. This suggests that the activist archivist should not stop at the limits of the context in which he emerged, but should develop into the activist archivist required of our times. This paper notably attempts to support the conceptual foundation of the archivists role as an activist archivist who has thus far actively conducted activities in established institutional, private-sector, and community archive, as well as in the civil society field, and who is expected to perform more necessary roles. This paper also examines what the archivist is in society, why he/she is needed, and what his/her value is, by re-shedding light on the activist archivist. Such efforts were found to support the social need for the archivist and the developments of the times, as well as to interact with such developments. This study is expected to be furthered as one of the theories about the activist role of an archivist, from existing archivists of the public institution and the private sector to archivist candidates and researchers.
