Abstract
Antigone is one of representative ancient Greek tragedies written by Sophocles(497/496-406/405 BC). It has traditionally been interpreted in the utilitarian viewpoint such as the rule of law vs. family ethics. And in Seminar VII, Jacques Lacan(1901-1981) introduced a new interpretation for Antigones desire and its fulfillment through a psychoanalytic approach to heroine Antigone. This study discusses Lacans interpretation of Antigone and examines how this is reproduced in musical works.
In this study, death, sublimation, and jouissance are identified as the three key concepts of Lacans interpretation of Antigone. Based on this, various pieces of dramatic music on the theme of Antigone were analyzed. According to the results, Antigones state of symbolic death is reproduced musically as an important theme in works of Traetta, Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns, and Theodorakis. And musical works of Honegger and Orff emphasize catharsis as an aesthetic effect produced by Antigone who implemented sublimation. Also, jouissance resulting from the fulfillment of pure desire and her jouissance reached through death are presented musically through musical works of Bloch, Honegger and Orff. These different ways of musical representation of the same text show that Antigone has artistic vitality in music that goes beyond the areas of literature and drama.
