Abstract
The growing preponderance of the globalization since the end of World War II has prompted the expansion of interculturality undermining inter-state, western-eastern, and own-cultural and other-cultural boundary. Such sociocultural transformation has been influential to music composition. With western composers embracing the overall culture of the East including philosophy, reflection, literature, art, musical material and custom, an intercultural composition has been prominent.
However, the scholarly comprehension on the western musical acceptance of eastern culture shows a sharp contrast, which is based on the historical, social, and cultural relationship between the West and East. From 17th century, western composers sharpened the image of the East as other beings distinguished from the West and described that image in the western musical language. Since the mid-20th century, they have tended to accept the eastern music and overall culture. A positive perspective on this transformation asserts that unlike previous orientalism, interculturalism in music is the new paradigm to avoid the cultural discrimination of the West and East and exercise the aesthetics of hybridization. Meanwhile, the negative one accentuates the identification of eastern culture with premodern one in the acceptance process. It also issues that the distortion, appropriation, and imitation of the eastern culture in the western way, asserting those are de facto expansion of orientalism.
The two divergent discourses on intercultural composition have respective limitations. First, the negative perspective disregards the individual imagination and musical expression in musical activities by focusing on political and social condition in cultural production and consumption. In addition, the views emphasis on dominant and subordinate relations interferes with contemplating how the western composers sort, manipulate, and adjust western factors in line with the eastern culture they accommodate. That is, the constraint of the negative perception is the simplification of inter-action of cultures. Next, the positive perspective focuses on similarity and difference in own culture and other culture as well as composers personal choice exploring composition materials and methods, resultingly dilutes the tension caused by social structural factors. Namely, conflicts from the encounter of dissimilar cultures are overlooked by the aesthetic reduction of hybridization.
Considering the concept of interculturality, however, it can be asserted that the inconsistent comprehension on western composers acceptance of eastern culture clearly reveals the ambivalence in the combination of different cultures. In this sense, both perspectives should be complemented in order to explore creativity and cultural tension in an inter-cultural composition properly.
This study is to suggest that interculturality should be seen as a perspective to analyze a cultural event instead of a term to describe the event simply. What intercultural perspective is to postulate western composers accommodation of eastern culture as a creative cultural translation involving dilemma of temporality and authenticity. In particular, this study focuses on how western composers manage the dilemma between the contemporaneity and representativeness, temporal heterogeneity and homogeneity of the two distinctive cultures and the cultural authenticity and personal creativity in the course of eliminating and incorporating the specific components of eastern culture.
This research is to re-interpret Royanji(1983-5) by John Cage and Concerto for Pipa with String Orchestra(1997) by Lou Harrison. With his apprehension of Zen Buddhism implicated in the medieval theology, John Cage employs the elimination of the spiritual connotation of Ryoanji Garden and the abstraction of the shape of the garden, and the ostensible characteristics of I-Ching, Korean traditional music for constituting musical parameters. Explicitly, his composition intercrosses heterogeneous temporality of the two cultures with abstract and structural acceptance of eastern culture based on misinterpretation by the analogy of own culture. Meanwhile, taking an interest in the symbol of Pipa, Chinese traditional instrument, Harrison notably adopts the old form of western music. His work conceals Pipas unique trait and spotlights the universality of Pipa and western instruments, which shows the homogenization of the former with the latter by the regression of time.
The interpretation from intercultural perspective is meaningful in that it provide a valuable tool to precisely see how different cultures are interweaved. Regarding Cages and Harrisons work, it is scrutinized that they emphasize the homogeneity of own and other cultures, rather than heterogeneity, at the expense of the elimination of other cultures authenticity. This point implies that the realization of genuine interculturality is bumpy and the baffling problem of interculturality goes to the valuation difficulty of music consequently. In this context, it is significantly required to bring up discourse on intercultural composition continually providing chances for composers to deliberate the ideal acceptance of other culture. This research has its academic significance in terms of the systematic analysis of intercultural composition which will be contributory to follow-up studies.
