만해 한용운의 평화사상

Abstract

본 논문에서는 평화란 무엇이고, 어떤 상태를 평화라고 할 수 있을지를 일제 강점기의 인물인 만해 한용운을 통해 고찰함으로써 오늘날 우리에게 시사하는 바가 무엇인지 고찰하였다. 만해의 개인적, 시대적 배경은 평화란 무엇인가 하는 질문에 대한 답을 찾는데 좋은 단서를 제공할 수 있다. 그의 생애 전체가 오롯이 갈등과 폭력으로 점철된 시대였고, 그 가운데서 출가 수행자로서의 그의 삶과 ｢님의沈默｣으로 대표되는 작품세계, 그리고 폭넓은 정치 사회적 활동을 두루 관통하고 있는 문제의식이 바로 평화였기 때문이다. 만해는 관군과 동학, 전통과 근대, 제국주의와 민주주의가 부딪치는 현장에서 생명(生命)의 보편성을 통찰했다. 그리고 이 생명성에 반하는 제국주의의 폭력성을 고발하고 그에 항거했다. 그의 평화관은 시 ｢님의沈默｣을 비롯해서 다양한 형태의 문학작품을 통해드러났다. 여기서 만해는 존재 전체의 생명성에 대한 깊은 연민과 실존적인 인간애에 바탕을 둔 평화관을 보여주고 있다. 만해의 평화관은 또 ｢조선독립에 대한 감상｣ 같은 시사성 높은 글을 통해서 더욱 적극적으로 드러난다. 여기서 그는 평화의 핵심적 기준 내지 가치로 평등과 자유 두 가지를 꼽고 있다. 이러한 평화관에 따르면, 당사자가 서로 대등하고 평등하지 못한 위치에서 구현되는 평화는 일시적이거나, 위장된 거짓된 평화일 수밖에 없으며, 상대를 무릎 꿇려얻는 평화는 어떤 경우에도 평화가 될 수 없다는 것을 알 수 있다.

Peace, which is made by kneeling on the other side, cannot be peace in any case.
