The study is an attempt to explore the sociocultural context of encouraging plastic surgery among Korean high school girls who have undergone cosmetic surgery.
In this study, the five variables that affect the plastic surgery procedures of high school girls were analyzed. They are schooling, self-help discourses from their parents and peers, selfie-culture in the era of social networking services platforms, and the internalization of distorted views on women.
In the school system, body image program is conducted through athletic courses and school life guidance. Physical education courses aim for the entire education through balanced development across the domains of psychomotor, cognitive, and affective. To foster desirable personalities and mental and physical fitness through internalization and practice of physical activity values and to foster positive body image and self consciousness and grow as healthy people. However, the learning environment and institutional conditions for systematically overcoming body image problem, values for appearance, gender education and social development are vastly insufficient. Most of the study participants felt that the subjects were only for improving athletic skills and assessing practical skills, and stated that they had no memory of receiving systematic or professional body image program. At least the only program for learning body image they received at school was secondary sex education in health care class. It also depends on the teachers level of knowledge and discretion, limiting the quality of education to be different.
High school girls say that the guidance in their lives is a routine discipline that regulates their bodies, makeup, clothing, hair-styles, and others. However, the study participants also point out that the paradox of the strict schoolgirl and the acceptance of feminine standards is not the same as the basic virtue of securing appearances for female students.
Most of the participants say they have low self-confidence and self-esteem as a result of receiving comments about their appearance from their peers and their family members, and relate the loss of self-esteem to their appearance to everything else. When there is not a sufficient resource available to gain a sense of self-esteem, the acceptance and assessment of ones appearance is an important factor for high school girls. Talk about Self-help discourses through the parents and peers can help the high school girls stick to the dichotomy of the notion of studying or looking good, and freely embrace self-watching and control. Plastic is referred to as self-completing projects without developing critical thinking that can be objective away from the assessment of ones appearance.
High school girls regard the body as a docile entity that can be changed at any time according to the ideal standards required by society. Also, efforts to build a competitive body are seen as a spec in the context of self-discipline.
The Korean plastic surgery industry instills the body as a key place to define identity, undermining the chances and competitiveness of the diverse talents and resources of high school girls. Women who practice plastic surgery encourage high school girls to imitate them, evaluating them as being actively self-developers. Plastic surgery is called investment and effort to increase the competitiveness of self-direction typing out women with inappropriate faces, and homogenizing womens bodies. In the process, the girls are asked to indiscriminately accept the idea of physical appearance is power.
The participants in the study say they have chosen to mold themselves carefully through self-directed learning such as surgical sites, surgery procedures, doctors, prices, and services, but there is a lack of evidence in the plastic surgery industry that self-forming in the name of science and technology.
The study participants who have experienced a docile body that can be recreated through plastic surgery say they have gained confidence through the transformed body. High school girls say investing in and managing their bodies through plastic surgery is not an option and should be done as a rule. As the body is adopted as a uniform body requested by society, the body of high school girls is consolidated, reinforcing self-control, body surveillance, and strengthening their physical supervision.
As a daily use of social networking services via smart phones, selfie-culture provides a platform for girls to practice plastic surgery. Feel the need for plastic surgery through a series of processes to visualize the body in a space of physical monitoring and control in real time.
After cosmetic surgery, the participants have a new experience with different looks. In a world where physical discrimination exists, the body that is altered by plastic surgery is evaluated positively and helps to gain self-confidence. At the same time, high school girls are again being challenged to get plastic surgery done. The ever-changing plastic surgery trend is forcing high school girls to become obsessed with following a new trend.
The study implies that it was the first paper to try to interpret and analyze the plastic surgery experiences of Korean high school girls using their direct voices and perspectives. Not many papers analyze the plastic surgery experiences of high school girls with a gender-based perspective.
The study tracked the contradictions, conflicts, and possibilities that were revealed by female high school girls who experienced plastic surgery. Through this, I hope that this paper will provide a foundation to find an alternative to the unified and ill-conceived body discourse that is prevalent in Korean society.
