서용선의 단종 역사화(端宗 歷史畵) 연구

Abstract

1980년대 초기 소나무 연작을 시작으로, 서용선은 지난 40여 년 간 인간과 역사에 대한 탐구를 지속해왔다. 작가가 그간 다뤄온 역사, 전쟁, 신화 등의 주제 중 본 연구는 단종 역사화 연작에 주목한다. 작가는 1980년대 중반부터 유적지 답사와 사료 분석을 통하여 단종애사와 관련된 역사적 사실을 수집하였는데, 이를 역사화의 형태로 가시화하여 비극적인 역사를 새로운 관점으로 풀어내고자 하였다. 한편 작품의 주요 주제는 계유정난을 비롯한 역사적 사건과 단종, 세조, 사육신 등의 인물, 청령포, 장릉 등의 장소로 요약된다.

작가는 수학시절부터 1970년대 민족기록화 작업의 성행과 1980년대 민중미술의 등장을 차례로 목격하였으나, 이와 구별되는 서사의 방식과 형식적 특성을 보이며 독창적인 작품세계를 구축하였다. 이에 서구의 표현주의 계열과 구상계열 사조로부터 양식적인 영향을 받아 원색의 사용, 선이 강조된 형태, 평면적 공간감 등으로 역사를 묘사해왔다. 이러한 조형언어를 통하여 작가가 주목하고자 했던 점은 인간 존재에 대한 탐구였다. 즉, 텍스트로 고착화된 과거의 사건을 현 시대의 방식으로 재해석하는 통시적 시도로써 개인의 비극을 인간 보편의 것으로 승화시켰다.

본 연구는 서용선의 단종 역사화를 주제별로 분석한 뒤, 작업 전반의 형식적 특성뿐만 아니라 내러티브적 특성에 대해 고찰해보고자 하였다. 특히 기존에 발표된 대부분의 비평이 표현방식과 주제에 대한 해석에 집중되어 있다는 점에 입각하여, 이를 보완하고자 작가가 역사화를 인식하는 태도를 아울러 살펴보았다. 또한 현재까지 서용선에 대한 단일 연구는 진행되지 않은바, 본 논문은 작가의 작품 세계가 한국 현대 역사화로서 갖는 의의를 폭넓게 이해하고자 하였다. 이를 통해 서용선의 단종 역사화로 구체화된 현 시대의 역사화 장르가 예술적 의의뿐만 아니라 서사적 의의 또한 갖추고 있음을 확인하였다.

생존 작가의 작품을 다루고 있다는 점에서, 단종 역사화의 확장 가능성은 이 연구의 한계로 작용할 것이다. 그러나 서용선의 단종 역사화를 다각적으로 분석한 최초의 학위논문으로서 본 연구는 추후 서용선이 나아갈 방향성을 예측하며 작가의 작업을 바라보는 관점을 확장하고자 하였다. 궁극적으로는 작가의 인문학적 태도 및 역사화에 대한 인식을 기반으로 작품을 분석하며 한국 현대 역사화의 가능성과 필요성을 확인했다는 사실에 의의를 두고자 한다.

Yongsun Suh(b. 1951), who entered the art world in the early 1980s with Pine Tree series, has been exploring human and history for over 40 years. Among the themes of history, war, myths, and others, this paper concentrates on The King Danjong series of his history paintings. From the mid-1980s, the artist has collected historical facts related to Danjong and Gyeyujeongnan through the exploration of heritage sites and the analysis of historical records. He then tried to visualize them in the form of history paintings and to unravel the tragic history with a new perspective. The main subject matters of the work are the historical events such as Gyeyujeongnan, the characters such as Danjong and Sejo, and the places such as Cheongryeongpo and Jangleung.

Although Suh witnessed the enlightenment of the nationalistic recordings in the 1970s and the emergence of the People's Art in the 1980s, he built his unique style of painting such as use of primary colors, forms emphasizing lines, and flatness of space, partially influenced by the Western style of expressionism and figurative art. Through this formative language, Suh tried to explore human existence. In other words, the tragedy of individuals has been sublimated into universal one with his diachronic attempt to reinterpret the past events with a present perspective.

The purpose of this study is to analyze The King Danjong series, the history paintings of Suh based on the subject matters and to examine the narrative and formal qualities of the entire work. Most of the criticisms published in the past have focused on the method of expression and the interpretation of themes so far. Therefore, the thesis examines the attitude of Suh on history paintings in order to supplement the limitation. As the first study analyzing The King Danjong Series of Suh, this paper tries to understand the significance of his works as the contemporary Korean history painting. This study affirms that history paintings of the contemporary era exemplified by the Suhs are meaningful not only as art but also as narratives.

In the sense that it deals with the works of living artist, the possible extensibility of Suh's works will serve as a limit of this study. However, as a pioneering research about Suh's history paintings, this study tries to expand the perspective of his work by predicting the future direction of his painting. Ultimately, this paper is significant that it sheds light upon the future of the contemporary Korean history painting as it finds its necessity analyzing the works of the artist based on his humanistic attitude and understanding of history paintings.
