도스토옙스키의 '죽음의 집의 기록' 연구: 민중성의 원체험을 찾아서

Abstract

이 글은 도스토옙스키가 감옥에서 체득한 민중지식과 민중성 개념 사이에 창작이라는 원체험이 가로놓여 있음을 말하고자 한다. '죽음의 집의 기록'은 그가 발견한 민중지식의 보고로 일컬어지며, 이 수기의 주체 또한 작가 도스토옙스키와 동일시되어 왔다. 그러나 이 글은 자신이 발견한 민중적 원칙에 대해 말하고 있는 도스토옙스키의 목소리를 듣기 위해 작품 전체에 실현된 저자 형상에 주목해야 한다는 입장이다. 모순된 인격을 드러내는 서술자 고랸치코프, 액자 속 수기의 구성, 서술자 고랸치코프가 수집한 이야기 등 '죽음의 집의 기록'이라는 다층적 텍스트 전부가 도스토옙스키가 민중성을 발견하는 과정을 담고 있다. 이는 곧 사상가 또는 평론가로서 확고하게 민중의 이상을 피력했던 도스토옙스키가 실제로는 적잖은 환멸을 안겨주었던 민중의 실체를 딛고 그 이상에 도달하게 되는 과정에 다름 아니다. 민중이 자체적으로 지닌 교양의 가능성을 증명하기 위해 수기는 민중으로 하여금 말하게 해야 한다. 아무런 가책 없이 죄상을 밝히는 일을 금기시하는 민중문화에 가로막혀 있던 화자가 꿈결에 민중의 이야기를 듣게 되는 구조는 이후 작가로서 도스토옙스키가 추구하게 될 민중성의 원체험이 바로 '죽음의 집의 기록'이라는 창작행위 속에서 발생했음을 시사한다.

This article tries to find Dostoevskys original experience of narodnost in his novel Notes from the Dead House. We usually regard this novel as a direct source of what author thinks of Russian narod. Likewise we identify the narrator Goraynchikov as the author himself. So this article suggests the concept of authors image or implied author realized in the entire text. The contradictory aspect of the narrator, the frame construction, short story inserted, all these elements of the novel demonstrate how Dostoevsky reached his own narodnost as an ideal concept of Russian narod. Whereas as publicist Dostoevsky firmly believed in narodnost, as a novelist Dostoevsky had to overcome the difficulty he has encountered while bringing out there to back here in his writing. His novel has to let the narod speak for themselves if it is to prove their gramotnost. The narrator at first confronts prisoners implicit culture prohibiting to tell about their past. In Notes from the Dead House one of narods narratives appear in the form of the independent story Akulkas huaband, which indicates that Dostoevskys original experience of narodnost also lies in the creation of Notes from the Dead House.
