Abstract
A fault is the most general, but hazardous accident that can be occurred in distribution systems, so the devices connected to the system should be protected. In case of DC distribution system, the devices should install DC link capacitor to stabilize its DC link voltage to the system voltage, but the capacitor is vulnerable to fault, since it can cause an overcurrent to the capacitor, occured sharp drop of system voltage, and the capacitor can explode.
On the other hand, plug overvoltage can be occurred when a plug installation which connects a device to the distribution system is abruptly separated during the device conducting a current. The current has no route to flow but the inductive energy is stored inside the line inductance, so the energy is forced to resonate with parasitic capacitance between the plug electrodes, and this causes plug overvoltage. In worst case, a spark can be occurred between the plug electrodes, which can damage the plug contact, and the other devices that shares or connected near the plugging point can be affected by the overvoltage at the plugging point.
In this paper, the actions of sources and loads connected to the system provoked by the accidents are analyzed by the cases of current flowing directions, and the structures of the components in the distribution system are rebuilt. First, in order to protect devices from fault, a switching leg consist of an active switch and a diode, and a current limiting inductance are installed in front of the DC link capacitor. The active switch at the upper side is turned off as an overcurrent is sensed, and the diode at the lower side flows the fault current in order to get rid of the energy stacked in line inductance. In case of plug overvoltage, a Zener diode is installed in front of filter inductance, the voltage across it is sensed, and the switching leg once again turns off to get rid of the energy stacked in line inductance in several to several tens of μs, and the overvoltage occurred between plug electrode is minimized. These functions against accidents are evaluated by simulations and experiments in the model DC distribution system.
