Abstract
The questions that learners ask are an important means of examining their level of understanding. Recent literature in science education has emphasized the sharing of knowledge through encouraging interactions within the digital environment. MOOC is emerging as a representative of the digital education environment. It is attracting attention because it gives people all around the world an opportunity to learn. However, research on the questions in the MOOC physics classroom is currently very limited.
In this context, this study analyzed the students' questions from MOOC physics lectures. Among the MOOC platforms, Khan Academy was chosen for a case study. 5,538 questions asked by learners after studying classical physics and quantum physics units in Khan Academy Physics course were analyzed. Based on Etkina (2000), the questions were classified into four levels in terms of difficulty, and based on Harper et al. (2003), were categorized into four question topics. In addition, the questions were further analyzed using text analysis and in-depth analysis of the question content.
In terms of the level of difficulty, classical physics showed similar numbers of high- and medium-level questions. In quantum physics, the number of high-level questions was significantly higher. In terms of the topic of question, conceptual questions were the most frequent topic both in classical physics and quantum physics. In classical physics, questions about concept and knowing were frequently raised. On the other hand, the percentage of concept questions in quantum physics was significantly higher.
Among the questions posed by the students, there were some questions too difficult to address in the classroom, some related to everyday life, or creative. I discuss directions for developing more effective MOOC physics classes and the educational implications for developing teaching strategies for preservice teachers.
