한국 유권자의 태도 상충성과 정치행태

Abstract

본 연구는 상충적 태도를 보이는 한국 유권자의 특징을 분석하고, 유권자의 태도 상충성과 정치행태 사이의 연관성을 경험적으로 규명한다. 본 연구는 특히 태도 상충성을 정당, 후보자, 쟁점과 같은 정치적 대상에 따라 구분하는 새로운 분석틀을 제안하고, 경험적 분석을 통해 본 연구가 제시한 분석틀의 설명력을 살펴본다. 더불어 기존 연구가 간과한 상이한 정치적 맥락이 유권자의 태도 상충성과 정치행태에 미치는 영향을 함께 살펴봄으로써 개인의 태도와 정치행태에 관한 연구의 지평을 확장하려 한다. 분석 결과, 태도 대상에 따른 구분법은 기존 연구들이 포착하지 못한 태도의 다차원성과 그 특징을 더 잘 드러내는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구가 제시한 모델 별로 상충적 유권자의 특징, 태도 상충성이 정치행태에 미치는 영향, 정치적 맥락에 따른 태도 상충성의 변화는 모두 다르게 나타났으며, 이전의 연구가 상충적 유권자라고 제시한 특징은 일부 모델에서만 확인되었다. 더불어 태도 상충성은 정당일체감의 강도, 이념성향, 교육정도 등의 변수를 통제하여도 투표참여 및 정치참여에 유의미한 영향을 주는 변수로 나타났기에 태도 상충성은 오차 분산이나 유권자의 판단 오류가 아닌, 개별 유권자의 정치행태를 설명할 수 있는 고유한 특징을 가진 중요 변수 중 하나라는 것을 다시 한 번 확인하였다. 나아가 태도 상충성과 정치참여의 관계를 통해 양대 정당 사이의 상충성과 후보자 사이의 상충성은 오히려 유권자로 하여금 적극적 정치참여를 유도하는 요인임을 경험적으로 입증하였다. 또한 본 연구는 선거 전후의 태도 상충성과 제19대 대통령 선거, 그리고 제20대 국회의원 선거에서 나타난 태도 상충성의 비교를 통해 선거 과정을 통한 정치적 경험과 상이한 선거 수준이라는 정치적 맥락이 태도 상충성의 변화에 미치는 영향을 분석하였고, 이를 통해 유권자가 복수의 정치적 대상들에게 갖는 태도는 유권자의 정치적 경험과 이들을 둘러싼 정치적 맥락에 따라 바뀔 수 있음을 확인하였다. 특히 대통령 선거의 경우, 유권자가 체감하는 중요도나 경쟁도, 그리고 화제성이 국회의원 선거보다 더 높다. 이러한 맥락의 차이는 태도 상충성이 유권자의 정치행태에 주는 영향력의 크기에 반영되어 대통령 선거 당시의 태도 상충성이 정치행태에 미치는 영향력은 국회의원 선거 당시의 태도 상충성보다 높았다. 본 연구는 그동안 정치행태 연구에서 주목받지 못했던 인간 내면의 갈등, 태도 상충성이 정치행태 분야에서 갖는 중요성과 특수성을 종합적으로 검증했다는 점에서 그 의의를 갖는다. 경험적 분석을 통해 선거의 유동성을 가중시키는 요인인 태도 상충성을 태도 대상 별로 분석하여 그 특징을 알아보고, 이것이 정치행태와 맺는 관계들을 정치적 맥락에 따라 비교 분석함으로써 본 연구는 기존의 연구들이 간과했던 지점을 연구에 포함시켰으며, 유권자의 태도를 통합적 관점에서 살펴보았다. 따라서 본 연구는 유권자의 태도에 대한 통합적이고 총체적인 접근과 개인의 태도와 행태 에 영향을 미치는 환경적 요인들을 종합적으로 검토한다.

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of individuals who show ambivalent attitudes towards political objects in South Korea, focusing on the relationship between attitudinal ambivalence and political behavior. Specifically, this study proposes a new framework for empirical research regarding electorate's attitudinal ambivalence in different domains such as political parties, candidates, and political issues. Furthermore, while comparing the change in ambivalence during campaigns in congressional and presidential election, this study sheds light on the effect of political context on public behavior. First, the new framework is more useful to capture the characteristics of attitudinal ambivalence. Results of the research indicate that the features from previous researches claiming that they affect the relationship between ambivalence and political behavior are statistically significant only in a few models. The research confirms that the new framework explains more of the electorate's ambivalent attitudes. Second, attitudinal ambivalence has an independent influence on individuals' political behavior, even when the factors that affect political behavior are statistically controlled. Therefore, the research reaffirms the explanatory power of attitudinal ambivalence. Third, the research examines the effect of political context. By comparing pre- and post survey of the 2017 presidential election, the research demonstrates that political experience acquired during campaigns can make the change in people's attitudes towards political objects. Moreover, level of election also makes difference in people's ambivalent attitudes. Especially, presidential election is considered to be the most important elections. In addition, competitiveness, degree of salience, and volume of information provided for various media are higher than in others. These contextual differences affect the relationship between attitudinal ambivalence and individuals' political behavior. The results represent that the size of effect in the presidential election is greater than the congressional election. As a consequence, the study emphasizes a comprehensive approach to individuals' attitudes and the importance of political context.
