Overseas Subsidiaries' Knowledge Sourcing From MNC-Headquarters

Abstract

Overseas subsidiaries are playing an increasingly important role in MNC innovation. What determines knowledge sourcing from MNC-Headquarters of overseas subsidiaries? We investigate factors that influence the extent to which overseas subsidiaries source knowledge from MNC-Headquarters. Drawing on both knowledge based view and social embeddedness view, we have proposed three hypotheses from both technical and social dimension and examined it empirically focusing on overseas subsidiaries in semiconductor and electronics industry. Statistical findings from negative binomial regressions show that technological area of the overseas subsidiary and R&D co-practice between inventors from MNC-Headquarter and overseas subsidiary matter.

다국적기업의 혁신에서 해외지사의 역할이 점점 중요해지고 있다. 본 연구는 어떤 요소들이 다국적기업의 해외지사가 본사로부터의 지식 소싱(knowledge sourcing)에 영향을 주는지에 대해 파헤쳐 보고자 하였다. 지식기반관점(knowledge based view)과 사회적 배태성 관점(social embeddedness view) 에 입각하여 기술적 차원(technical dimension)과 사회적 차원(social dimension)에서 모두 세 개의 연구가설을 세웠으며 글로벌 반도체산업과 전자(electronic)산업에 속한 다국적기업의 해외지사 특허자료로 음이항 회귀분석을 진행하였다. 실증검증 결과 해외지사의 기술분야와 해외지사와 본사간의 연구개발협력이 해외지사가 본사의 지식을 소싱하는데 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.
