가족경영체제가 기업의 사회적 성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 실증연구: 가족의 영향력을 중심으로

Abstract

기존 연구들은 경제학에 기반한 대리인 이론과 심리학에 기반한 청지기 이론에 따라 각각 가족기업을 운영하는 가족오너들에게 나타날 수 있는 특징들을 상반되게 설명하고 있어 아직까지 가족오너들의 경영참여에 따른 영향에 대해서는 논란이 있다. 이에 따라 선행연구들이 재무성과나 R&D 투자비용 등을 결과변수로 하여 가족기업을 평가해왔던 것과는 달리 본 연구에서는 기업의 사회적 성과(Corporate Social Performance)를 통해 가족기업의 특성을 살펴보고자 하였다. 본 논문은 가족경영체제 여부, 가족의 지분참여, 가족의 이사회 참여도를 독립변수로 하여 종속변수인 기업의 사회적 성과에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 연구하였으며 CEO type을 조절변수로 하였다. 이때, 기업의 사회적 성과는 2007년부터 2009년까지 한국경제정의연구소에서 발표된 경제정의지수(Keji index)를 이용하여 측정하였다. 그 결과 가족기업은 비가족기업보다 높은 사회적 성과를 달성하는 것으로 나타났으며, 가족의 이사회 참여도가 증가할수록 기업의 사회적 성과는 감소하였다. 또한 가족오너들의 지분참여는 기업의 사회적 성과와 유의미한 관계가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, CEO type을 상호작용항으로 적용한 경우 family CEO 일 때, 가족의 이사회 참여도는 기업의 사회적 성과와 양의 관계를 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 Nonfamily CEO 하에서는 가족의 이사회 참여도가 높을수록 기업의 사회적 성과가 낮아지지만, Family CEO하에서 가족의 이사회 참여도가 높을수록 기업의 사회적 성과는 높아짐을 의미한다.

Two contradictory perspectives, stewardship theory and agency theory, have emerged over the last decade regarding to the conduct and performance of family-controlled businesses. To resolve these distinctive perspectives, this paper empirically tested whether family-controlled businesses are related to corporate social performance under different influences of family owners. The samples include Keji index collected from 2007 to 2009. The results indicate that family-owned businesses conduct corporate social responsibility more. Also, companies generally achieve more corporate social performance when less family members play roles in board of director. However, if and only if one of the family members is CEO, then the result is opposite. That means that family firms show higher corporate social performance when more family members take part in board.
