Abstract

The theme 'Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR)' has been discussed ever since 1960's. Among several main issues related with CSR, its actual effectiveness has been significantly researched. According to previous study, all three opinions (positive, negative and neutral) coexist about CSRs effectiveness, especially about its impact upon corporate's financial outcome. However, there exist a putative reason why several opinions coexist upon its impact. As previous studies commonly treat different featured CSR activities all in one term CSR', its special effects are either neutralized or sometimes diminished. Moreover, previous studies has limitation as they only approach generalized cognition about CSR.
This study mainly focuses on figuring out whether there actually exist financial outcomes if certain company perform CSR activity. Moreover, it focuses on identifying specifically which CSR strategy is better than the others. To overcome previous studies limitations, among subdivided various CSR activity features, this study mainly focused on two features. One is the fit between CSR cause and the company and the other is regional category where the actual CSR activity's benefit approach. Also, according to previous studies, there exist various types of measuring CSR performance, this study used consumers willingness-to-pay and its premium price as a measure as they are visible and relatively easily measurable. Finally, to overcome limitations in previous conceptual studies and simple surveys, this study used online-based experiment, which the experimenter were asked to write down willingness-to-pay(WTP) price in pay-what-you-want(PWYW) way after reading an randomly prepared news article about a certain type of company performing CSR and its product, 'Cookie'. At this time, to perform an experiment more conservative way, all the experimental settings given to the experimenter were the same except for the sub-features of CSR. By using a randomized experimental setting and PWYW method, experimenter are able to avoid biases.
Meanwhile, with the experiment results, as there exists certain difficulty in figuring out CSR features moderating effect on CSR activities influence on consumers WTP, this study followed two steps to analyze the result and attest hypothesis. Thus, first of all the study focused on figure out whether performing CSR or not affects elevating WTP. Secondly, only among company's which perform CSR, the research conducted regression to figure out the marginal influence from two significant CSR features, fit and the region.
The result showed that the first hypothesis which was assumption that when compare WTP, the company doing CSR's value will be higher than the company not doing CSR could be accepted. And the second hypothesis, which the assumption that the company which perform high fit CSR's WTP value will be higher than the company with low fit CSR strategy, were also been accepted. However, the third hypothesis which the closer the regional relatedness between the beneficiary which enjoy the social benefit and the consumer, the WTP value will be higher were not accepted.
The significance of this research is that it examined Korean's own recognition about CSR activity and used random experimental setting which allowed to figure out limited but concrete outcome of CSR
