Abstract
Japanese electronics industry is called Galapagos Islands since Japanese customers have a deep-rooted royalty to Japanese products and a very unfriendly attitude to foreign ones. However, Galaxy S and S2 recorded good sales achievements as foreign products in Japanese smartphone market. Galaxy S took the first in the weekly ranking several times including the forth week of October, 2010 for the first time as a Korean product. Furthermore, Galaxy S2 was ranked at the number one in the monthly sales ranking in June, 2011. Just a few years ago, Samsung Electronics stopped selling its TV products in Japan due to its poor sales results. Therefore, it is needed to analyze theoretically success factors of Galaxy S series in Japan.
Analyzing success factors of Galaxy S series using Porters Diamond Model, it is clear that Galaxy S series were output of good production environment. Sansung Electronics put the largest investment on R&D in the world electronics industry in 2010. Also, the company has been concentrating on making better design. Therefore, the company could set its products as premium ones in Japan and attract many Japanese consumers looking for high-quality smartphones.
In addition, Japanese consumers are changing. Japanese consumers consider brand or the manufacturing country of products much less than before. Furthermore, as Korean pop culture including dramas and music came to be popular in Japan through Korean Wave(Hallyu), the number of Japanese feeling friendlier to Korea is increasing. Thus, the fact that Galaxy S series are Korean products isnt a disadvantage any more.
Finally, Galaxy S series could appeal to Japanese because of Samsungs partner, NTT Docomo, the largest telecommunication company in Japan. That's because Japanese tend to consider telecommunication company very important when buying mobile phones.
In sum, success of Galaxy S series in japan results from various favorable factors. However, it has been only one year since Galaxy S series were released in Japan. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether Galaxy S series can keep their good sales records from now on.
