Abstract

이 논문은 제인 오스틴의 『센스와 센서빌리티』에 나타난 센서빌리티 개념의 변주에 주목하여 여성 주체의 형성을 연구한다. 오스틴은 18세기 말의 보수적인 문화 담론이 센서빌리티를 사적이고 고립된 영역으로 협소화시켜 여성 억압의 도구로 활용하는 것에 반대하고 지적 능력, 섹슈얼리티, 욕망, 말하기를 포함하는 다양한 결의 센서빌리티를 제시한다. 단순한 대립 구도에서 벗어나 센스와 센서빌리티의 교차와 중첩을 이해할 때 이분법적 틀에 내재된 인식론적 한계를 넘어서는 앎과 이야기가 가능해진다. 오스틴의 여성 인물들은 확장된 센서빌리티를 발휘해 사회적 독해 능력을 기르고 몸의 주체가 되며 더 나아가 서사의 주체가 된다. 1장은 사회적 관습의 작동 방식을 분석하고 센서빌리티가 개별적인 기질인 동시에 필연적으로 사회적인 감각임을 밝힌다. 관습적 인식 속에서 유형화된 센스와 센서빌리티는 각각 사회적 능력으로서의 한계를 드러낸다. 센서빌리티를 사적인 영역에 가두지 않고 그 힘을 인지하는 것은 관습에의 저항이자 여성적 경험의 긍정이며 앎의 지평을 확장하는 일이다. 재창조된 센서빌리티는 감정, 윤리, 그리고 지식의 영역을 겹쳐 놓으며 여성 인물들이 관습 너머까지를 읽어내는 사회적 주체로 기능할 수 있도록 해 준다. 2장에서는 몸을 매개로 드러나는 센서빌리티를 통해 섹슈얼리티의 확장과 그 해방적 가능성을 고찰한다. 강렬한 감정과 몸의 체험은 인물들을 상투화의 위협으로부터 구원하고 몸의 주체로 만든다. 마리앤의 아픈 몸은 여성의 섹슈얼리티를 바라보는 사회적 시선의 성격을 드러내며, 회복의 과정에서 유형화된 센서빌리티로부터 자유로워진 감각의 힘을 보여준다. 또한 엘리너는 객관적 지식이나 규범으로는 설명되지 않는 몸의 반응과 욕망을 발견하고 받아들여 자기 이해의 폭을 넓힌다. 섹슈얼리티의 경험은 열린 정체성의 기반이며 관습적 인간관계를 넘어서는 자유로운 관계맺음의 통로이다. 『센스와 센서빌리티』는 결혼이라는 사회적 틀이나 로맨스 이데올로기에 담기지 않는 섹슈얼리티의 다양한 국면을 포착함으로써 기존 센서빌리티 담론에서 배제되었던 여성의 몸과 그 섹슈얼리티를 전면에 제시한다. 3장은 여성 인물의 말하기에 주목한다. 엘리너와 마리앤이 가진 예술적 기질은 표현과 창조의 욕구로서의 센서빌리티이며, 이러한 센서빌리티가 가진 힘은 최종적으로 자기 서사의 주체가 되는 방식으로 발현된다. 센서빌리티를 발휘해 판단하고 행동하며 스스로 서사를 구성하고 발화하는 권위를 갖게 되는 것은 오스틴이 그리는 여성적 주체의 탄생이다. 오스틴의 센서빌리티 다시 쓰기는 앎에 대한 관심과 연동하고, 새로운 차원의 지식이 소설의 내용과 구조를 이루도록 하여 소설 장르 자체를 재정의한다. 오스틴은 『센스와 센서빌리티』에서 여성에게 주어진 사회적 조건들에 대한 통찰을 바탕으로 생존이나 적응을 넘어선 삶을 가능하게 하는 센서빌리티를 그린다. 센서빌리티는 주체성을 구성하는 사회적 능력이자 대립과 우열이 아닌 관계를 지향하는 가치이다. 관습적 사회가 은폐해 온 몸의 욕망을 긍정하며 성숙한 화자가 되는 여성 주체의 모습은 다채로운 이야기를 통해 이분법적 인식 틀을 흔드는 서사 전략과 맞물리며 새로운 소설 쓰기의 여성적 힘을 보여준다.

This thesis aims to demonstrate how Austen revitalizes the notion of sensibility by articulating its social significance in her first major work Sense and Sensibility. Jane Austen represents feminine subjectivity as an embodiment of sensibility, and further reinvents the novel genre as a vehicle of thus represented feminine subjectivity. The first published novel has been the least cherished among Austen oeuvre for its apparent didactic structure; the long tradition of underestimation seems to be derived from the common misreading which emphasizes the simple dichotomy of sense and sensibility. This thesis, however, considers the novel deconstructing its own binary opposition and illuminating the intersection between sense and sensibility. In responding to ideologically oppressive prejudices against female sensibility, which is the heritage of the eighteenth century discourse of sensibility, Austen attempts to recognize the creative force of feminine sensibility. The first chapter examines the operation of social convention, to reveal that sensibility is necessarily public as well as private. Typified sensibility works as an oppression for women restraining them in the private sphere and reproducing negative stereotypes of femininity. Austen critically observes such norm of sensibility and redefines sensibility as a comprehensive social perceptivity which expands the realm of knowledge itself. The second chapter illustrates the ways in which sensibility is substantiated in the realm of bodily experience and sexuality. Mariannes body in particular manifests the danger and power of feminine sensibility. Elinor also becomes the subject of her own body through the unexpected experiences of erotism. Sense and Sensibility, capturing the powerful presence of sexuality which is not wholly contained within the social frame of heterosexual and monogamous marriage, demonstrates rich, corporeal, and multi-layered sensibilities. The last chapter argues that Elinor and Marianne become unique speaking subjects with advanced social perception and mature self-knowledge. The artistic disposition of the sisters could be interpreted as the creative aspect of sensibility, which is ultimately unfolded in the form of speaking. Such emergence of an authoritative feminine speaker sheds light on the reconceptualization of the novel. Austen reinvents sensibility as a social literacy necessary for acting as a feminine subject. The feminine subjectivity in Sense and Sensibility embraces miscellaneous, sometimes even contradictory experiences within its narrative against conventional expectations. Sustained by an alternative, expanded concept of knowledge, the novel genre thus becomes feminine.
