Abstract
Highly fluorescent organic π-conjugated compounds are promising for a wide range of applications such as light-emitting diodes, display, biological sensing, and labeling. Basically, the fluorescence color tuning of the organic π-conjugated compounds is effected by molecular design, which exploits intramolecular charge-transfer, annulation of aromatic ring, and extension of π-conjugation length. For the past decade, much attention has been paid on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism for fluorescence color tuning via controlling ratio and distance of donor-acceptor. It is beneficial to facile and precise adjustment of fluorescence color in the range of the donor emission to the acceptor emission. Especially, among the various FRET-controlled fluorescence color tuning system, self-assembled nanostructure system based on organic small compounds induces the system to act as a scaffold for highly efficient energy transfer due to distance of the donor-acceptor within closer spatial proximity compared to the other systems. Thus, recently, self-assembled nanostructures based on organic small compounds have been studied to demonstrate the fluorescence color tuning via efficient FRET, which is basically achieved with donor molecules exhibiting intense fluorescence in condensed solid state. However, stimuli-responsive FRET control for fluorescence color tuning based on small molecules rarely has been explored to date, even though it has a potential for above-mentioned applications with the highly efficient FRET processes.

Herein, to address the issue, I report on a demonstration of fluorescence color tuning via multi-processable FRET modulation in the highly emissive self-assembled nanostructures based on organic π-conjugated small molecules: nanoparticles system in aqueous medium and film system in polymer matrix. Such systems consist of different π-conjugated fluorescent compounds and photochromic compound, which serve a series of FRET processes. To control the FRET process, a distance between donor˗acceptor is manipulated by composition variation of donor˗acceptor and donor-selective self-assembly via solvent-vapor annealing (SVA). Furthermore, energy level is controlled by photo-induced interconversion of the photochromic compound used as a new acceptor. Such various processes induce the fluorescence color change of the nanoparticles and the film through enhancement or restriction of the FRET.
