Recently, TMS (Thermal Management System) has received attention from researchers as a way to enhance both fuel economy and emissions. There is a lot of research focused on the engine but research on Thermal Management Systems that deal not only with the engine but also other powertrain systems, such as cooling system, lubrication system, etc, is lacking. In addition, TMS themselves have not been studied widely. As such, now it is important to direct some research efforts towards TMS. In using a TMS, the regions with the most improved efficiency are cold-start and discarding the unneeded part of the exhaust gas emission, which can save about 20~30% of the total chemical fuel energy. However, until recently it has been very difficult to get experimental data from real vehicles and then make accurate simulation models. Simulation models and our ability to acquire experimental data are better than a few years ago because of developments in technology. In addition, recently hybrid and electric vehicles have been the subject of strict regulations. Especially, those HEVs equipped with CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) have the advantage of giving assistance to the power source motor and operate with an optimal operation line (OOL). In spite of these advantages, CVT has disadvantages in that its efficiency is lower than other transmission systems and its life is shorter. Thus, in this paper, a CVT transmission model is constructing using four kinds of modeling and the model efficiency is improved by using a waste heat recovery system.
Our model of the CVT consists of variable sub systems including thermal mass, heat transfer and friction models as well as a waste heat recovery model, which are used to analyze heat and predict temperature in the transmission.
The model introduced in the paper is focused on oil lubrication and temperature unlike previous research models. CVT loss energy is a heat source in the transmission that results in rising oil temperatures. Particularly, unlike engine oil and coolant, transmission oil temperature is raised slowly raised when vehicle starts, this can cause friction loss, especially in cold-start conditions. Therefore, each model in this paper takes this into account while assuming that the transmission and engine are a simple cylinder shape. Moreover, a heat exchanger is used in waste heat recovery systems for efficiency and weight. The integration model TTM (Transmission Thermal Management) consists of transmission and WHR (Waste Heat Recovery) systems developed in this research. The simulation results of the system were validated by experimental data and suggest methods to improve the efficiency of transmissions.
As a result, transmission efficiency is improved by about 1.4% and the CVT temperature is raised about 11°C in the UDDS driving mode meaning transmission losses are reduced by the nominal system and there is also a possibility of reduced fuel consumption. An integrated TTM model introduced in this research is expected to be the basis of more advanced research into this area
