Abstract

Abstract

A Study of Daegeum Playing Techniques for Contemporary Compositions

Kim Jeong-Seung

This study explores possible expansion of daegeum playing techniques related to intonation and the overtone structure; 12-tone technique, multiphonics, and tremolos(trills). The result of such analysis is as following.

In the case of 12-tone technique, one way to expand traditional techniques for a non-key flute such as the daegeum, is to procure as many as possible different ways of sounding identical pitch using fingering techniques, including harmonics. By an analysis of acoustic impedance this study focuses on learning the overtone structure of the daegeum. As a result some new fingerings were discovered, as well as the fact that the highest note of daegeum can be extended from G6 (㵈) to A6 (氵㶋), thereby procuring as much as 3 octaves for its tonal range. Also, by applying existing theories of acoustics and this study found some acoustic principles underlying the fingerings for the daegeum; principle of 1) acoustic length and end effect, 2) cross fingering, and 3) register hole.
For multiphonics, based on the analytic graph of acoustic impedance derived from the study of 12-tone technique, this study discovers that cross fingering and half hole fingering have a unique overtone structure which is intimately related to performing multiphonics. Moreover, having deduced 729 different fingerings possible on the daegeum, which were then listed tested through actual performance, this study has clarified the possibility for multiphonics and overtone series.
The newly discovered techniques for multiphonics, depending on the pitch of first overtone, are the groups belonging to; E♭4(黃), E4(大), F4(太), G♭4(夾), G4(姑), A♭4(仲), and A4(蕤). The number of overtones for the groups are 113 in total; 5 for E♭4(黃), 4 for E4(大) 9 for F4(太) and 11 for G♭4(夾), 33 for G4(姑), 15 for A♭4(仲), and 36 for A4(蕤). Adding this to the existing number of multiphonics, we now have a total of 131 ways. Further, this study discovers that consecutive playing of multiphonics, in other words playing multiphonics using two or more fingerings, is possible. This considerably complements traditional method of multiphonics, having now added new multiphonics including cross fingering and half hole fingering, overcoming the defects arising from individual difference in performing method.
In the case of tremolos, using the principles listed above in terms of 12-tone technique and multiphonics, this study shows ways to increase cases where tremolos is possible, which, until now, have been very limited.
A new possibility for tremolo has now been discovered, especially that for half hole fingering and harmonics, an active application of which has now opened the door for tremolo for various types of pitch forms. Moreover, through new techniques such as trills using the multiphonics and double trills, a daegeum player can develop his or her own acoustic style.
