Abstract
DFN(Discrete Fracture Network,
Fractures in a rock mass play a dominant role in the mechanical and hydraulic properties of the rock mass. The dominant factors that influence on the groundwater flow in a rock mass are hydraulic and geometric characteristics of fractures. Discrete fracture network (DFN) approach has widely been used in order to evaluate the hydraulic characteristics of a fractured rock mass. However, there are little studies on the relationship between the three-dimensional (3D) fracture geometry and the hydraulic conductivity of a rock mass.
In this study, a DFN model was developed to simulate the hydraulic conductivity of a rock mass. The model used the 2D and 3D DFNs, with the new assumptions for a correlation between lengths and apertures of fractures, and a trapezoid flow path in fractures. These assumptions which existing studies have not considered could make the developed model more practical and reasonable. And then, the numerical studies on the effect of geometric fracture properties on the hydraulic behavior of rock masses were carried out using this model. To avoid the boundary effect, the parent domain size was set to be larger than the sum of the analysis domain size and two times of the effective maximum fractures size. The representative elementary volume (REV) for the hydraulic conductivity of a rock mass seems to increase with decreasing mean length, mean aperture and density of fractures or increasing standard deviation of fracture apertures. The REV does not seem to exist for some rock masses having fracture network with low density and small length. Hydraulic conductivity tensors estimated in 2D analysis were larger than them in 3D. And a REV size in 2D analysis was larger than that in 3D. Therefore, 2D DFN seemed to overestimate hydraulic conductivity of a rock mass comparing with 3D DFN.
Finally, the hydraulic characteristics of the granite rock mass at the KAERI Underground Research Tunnel (KURT) were simulated in order to evaluate the three-dimensional equivalent hydraulic conductivity tensors, the representative elementary volume and the groundwater inflow into the KURT. The developed discrete fracture network model had the capability of determining the REV size for the rock mass with respect to the hydraulic behaviour and estimating the groundwater flow into the tunnel at the KURT.
