이상향의 노스탤지어가 담긴 지평(地平) 표현 연구

Abstract

국문초록

본 논문은 2006년부터 2018년까지 창작한 도시, 전원 풍경의 작품 속에서 이상향의 노스탤지어가 담긴 지평 표현에 관한 작품 연구논문이다. 본인의 작품을 중심으로 창작의 동기와 이론적 배경, 작품의 주제 의식 그리고 조형적 특성을 체계적으로 연구 분석함으로써 창작작품 제작의 과정과 목적을 분석하고 규명하는 데 연구의 의의가 있다.

이상향(理想鄕), 노스탤지어(Nostalgia), 지평(地平)은 연구자 작품의 내용과 형식, 의의를 밝혀줄 핵심 개념이다. 그리움의 본체로서 노스탤지어의 대상이 이상향이며, 이상향의 노스탤지어가 반영된 곳이 지평이고, 이러한 지평의 표현이 작품의 주된 양식이라 할 수 있다. 이상향이란 궁극적으로 인간이 욕망하는 좋은 이상적인 세계를 뜻한다. 그러나 실재하지 않는 허구의 공간이라는 중의적 의미도 있다. 이상향이란 현실 속에서는 실현 또는 귀환 불가능한 존재이지만 개인, 집단, 민족이 지향해 온 본원적인 장소로서 항상 인간의 소망과 그리움의 대상이 되었다. 그래서 이상향의 사상(思想), 형상(形象), 향수(鄕愁)가 반영된 예술에는 그 시대의 인생관, 세계관 등이 자연스럽게 배어있다. 따라서 연구자의 지평 표현 속에 투영된 이상향의 사상과 가치를 규명하고, 이상향의 노스탤지어의 담긴 지평 표현의 기능과 의미를 밝힌다. 그래서 본 연구는 낙원에 대한 실재나 유형에 관한 연구가 아니라 이상향의 노스탤지어가 담긴 지평으로서 도시와 전원 표현에 대한 창작연구논문이다. 기존의 이상향에 관한 연구가 원형(prototype) 또는 유형별 분석의 틀을 사용하였다면, 본 연구는 이상향이 반영된 지평의 창작 과정에서 어떻게 이상향을 지각하고 향수하느냐에 대한 논의로 차별화하였다. 즉 이상향의 보편적 연구가 아니라 연구자가 이상향을 직관하는 방식, 이상향에 대한 그리움으로서의 노스탤지어 연구, 이와 같은 요소들이 함의된 도시 또는 전원 지평 표현에 관해 분석하고 설명하였다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 노스탤지어의 대상인 이상향의 이해를 위해 동·서양의 대표적 이상향의 원형과 성격에 대해 선행 연구하였다. 그리고 회화사의 대표작을 중심으로 이상향의 표현 방식과 공간적 특성을 파악하고, 내적인 철학과 사상의 전개과정을 분석하였다. 이러한 선행연구를 근간으로 지평 속에 투영된 이상향에 대한 인식과 자각의 구조를 연구자의 작품을 중심으로 비교 분석하였다. 그리고 예술에 있어서 이상향에 대한 노스탤지어의 대표적 유형과 역사적 전개를 연구자의 작품 속 이상향의 노스탤지어가 담긴 지평 표현 및 변천 과정과 비교함으로써 작품에 내재한 이상향의 본질과 인식의 문제를 규명하는 데 연구의 목적을 두었다.

전체 논문은 크게 Ⅰ. 서론, Ⅱ. 이상향의 의미와 형상화, Ⅲ. 이상향에 대한 노스탤지어의 개념과 함의, Ⅳ. 이상향의 노스탤지어가 담긴 지평의 표현, Ⅴ. 조형적 특징, Ⅵ. 결론의 여섯 부분으로 구성되어 있다.

제Ⅰ장은 서론으로 연구의 배경과 목적, 내용과 방법, 의의에 대해 밝힌다.

제Ⅱ장은 이상향에 대해 중점 기술한다. 주된 내용은 이상향의 개념과 유형 그리고 이상향이 회화로서 형상화된 대표 작품에 대한 연구이다. 특히, 이상향의 개념에서는 이상향의 정의와 동․서양의 대표적인 이상향인 도연명의 도원과 토머스 모어의 유토피아를 비교 검토하면서 이상향의 전반적 개론에 접근한다. 이러한 개론적 이해를 바탕으로 사상성(思想性), 실지성(實地性), 시간성(時間性)을 중심으로 이상향의 유형을 분류한다. 그리고 이에 따른 대표적인 회화 작품으로 태평성대적 성격의 〈태평성시도〉, 무위자연적 성격의 〈무릉도원도〉, 은둔도학적 성격의 〈무이구곡도〉로 형상화의 실례를 들어 설명하였다.

제Ⅲ장은 이상향에 대한 노스탤지어에 관해 논하였다. 주된 내용은 노스탤지어의 개념과 반영의 유형 그리고 기능에 대한 연구이다. 노스탤지어는 고향에 대한 향수로서의 정신병리학적인 용어에서 출발하였지만, 본 논고에서는 이상향에 대한 그리움, 동경의 개념으로 의미가 확장된다. 또한 이상향에 대한 노스탤지어가 향수병과 달리 인간의 삶을 추동하는 정서적인 기능과 긍정적 역할에 주목한다. 그리고 이상향에 대한 노스탤지어의 유형 분석에서는 자각 여부에 따른 복원적 노스탤지어와 성찰적 노스탤지어로 분류하여 상세 분석함으로써 노스탤지어의 역할과 기능의 함의에 대해 고찰하였다.

제Ⅳ장은 연구자의 작품 주제와 형식에 대한 연구로 본 연구의 가장 핵심을 이룬다. 특히 주요 소재이자 작품 인식의 중심 토대인 지평에 대한 의미를 화론적, 철학적, 공간적으로 분석하고 이상향의 노스탤지어가 담긴 지평 표현에 대해 중점 연구한다. 지평은 사전적으로 한계를 지운다라는 경계의 의미가 있는데, 본 논고에서는 지평의 정의를 원(遠)의 토대, 지각(知覺)의 배경, 경계로서의 공간으로 새롭게 의미를 부여하여 재해석하였다. 그리고 경계로서의 공간은 허구와 실재, 이상과 현실, 차안과 피안의 공간으로 분류하여 경계의 의미를 부연하였다. 특히, 이상향의 노스탤지어가 반영된 지평의 성격 구분은 작품성향의 변화에 따른 변천사이면서 근원적인 이상향에 대한 탐구과정이다. 작품의 변천과정은 연도별 세 단계로 분류하였는데, 1기는 2006년부터 2008년까지 도시풍경 중심의 허구의 지평, 2기는 2008년부터 2013년까지 인물표현 중심의 부재의 지평, 3기는 2013부터 2018년까지 전원, 자연을 중심으로 한 귀의의 지평으로 이상향의 노스탤지어가 투영된 지평 표현의 변모된 과정을 내용과 형식적 측면에서 설명하였다.

제Ⅴ장은 연구자의 작품에 대한 조형적 특징에 관해 연구하였다. 작품 속의 지평 표현에 대한 형태, 시각법, 색채기법, 표현기법, 상징적 제재에 대한 분석이 주를 이룬다. 첫째는 지평에 투영된 이상향 형식의 두 가지 대표 유형으로 심산형과 해도형으로 구분하여 기술하였다. 둘째는 지평 표현에 나타난 시방식으로 전통적인 삼원법 중에서 평원과 고원 중심의 시각법 활용에 대해 살펴보았다. 셋째는 채색법에 대한 색의 의미와 기법에 대한 연구이다. 특히 연구자 작품의 고유한 색채대비인 청색과 황색, 청색과 녹색의 색채대비를 중심으로 설명하였다. 다음으로 동양화의 뉴미디어매체 활용에 관한 것으로 넷째는 렌티큘러(lenticular)를 활용한 렌티스케이프(Lentiscape)의 제작과정과 의미를 기술하였다. 다섯째는 작품제작과정 동영상으로서 〈공(空)〉 스톱모션애니메이션에 대해 분석하면서 비움(空)과 채움(滿)의 의미에 대해 논하였다. 여섯째는 골목길, 보름달, 불꽃을 이상향이 반영된 대표적인 노스탤지어의 상징적 제재로 선정하여 각각의 대상에 담긴 향수, 감흥에 대한 정서적 고찰을 하였다.

결론으로 연구자의 작품 전과정을 역사적, 의미론적, 조형적으로 총결하였다. 특히, 예술 지평에 반영된 이상향의 의의와 유형을 제시하고 연구자의 작품과 비교함으로써 이상향의 노스탤지어가 함의된 지평의 성격과 변천의 의미 그리고 표현의 특성을 규명하는데 연구의 주된 의의를 두었다. 끝으로 창작 작품활동의 전반을 성찰, 총결하고 궁극적으로는 작품의 내적 깊이와 형식의 운폭을 확장하며 앞으로의 작업방향과 새로운 가능성을 모색함에 의미를 부여하였다.

Abstract

A Study of the Expression of the Horizon containing Nostalgia for Utopia

This paper is a study on urban and rural landscape paintings created by the researcher during the period from 2006 to 2018. The main theme of the thesis is the study of the expression of the horizon that contains the nostalgia for Utopia(理想鄕). It will be the most meaningful to examine the process and purpose of the creation of these artworks(paintings, works of art) by systematically studying the motivation, theoretical background, themes, and formative characteristic of these works in the context of the other works produced by the researcher. Utopia(理想鄕), nostalgia and horizon are the crucial keywords indicating the content, form, and significance of the researchers artworks. The term Utopia(理想鄕) refers to an ideal place envisioned in the imagination, a place like Heaven, Paradise, Cockaigne, Shangrila or any ideal, perfect place created by the human imagination. The object of nostalgia as the central element of yearning is Utopia. The place where nostalgia for Utopia is expressed is in the horizon, and this expression of the horizon is the key feature of the researchers artworks Previous studies on Utopia have been based on Utopia as a prototype or category, but this study approaches Utopia from a different viewpoint, as a discussion on the perception and feeling of nostalgia for Utopia through the process of the expression of the horizon as it reflects Utopia. In other words, this is not a universal study of Utopia, but a study of how the researcher perceives one's own Utopia, of nostalgia as a longing for Utopia, and of the expression of urban or rural horizons in which these elements are incorporated. Therefore, I have explained the prototypes and characteristics of the representative of Utopia of the East and the West to understand the nostalgia for Utopia. In addition, I analyzed the style of expression and spatial characteristics of Utopia through an examination of representative paintings portraying Utopia, and analyzed the process of development of the internal philosophy and thought related to Utopia. Based on these preliminary studies, it is meaningful to compare and analyze the structure of perception and awareness regarding Utopia in the expression of the horizon in the artworks of the researcher. This paper is structured into six sections: Ⅰ. Introduction, Ⅱ. The Meaning of Utopia and the Expression of its Form, Ⅲ. The Concept and Function of Nostalgia for Utopia, Ⅳ. The Expression of the Horizon containing the Nostalgia for Utopia, Ⅴ. Formative Features, and Ⅵ. Conclusion. Chapter Ⅰ introduces the background and purpose of the research and its contents, methods and significance. Chapter II focuses on Utopia. The main content is the study of the concept and form of Utopia, and representative paintings of Utopia. The concept, definition and general understanding of Utopia is approached by comparing Tao Yuan Mings Tao yuan and Thomas Moores Utopia as a representative expression of Utopia in the East and the West. Based on this introductory comprehension, I characterized the representative paintings as ideological, realistic, or temporal. Chapter Ⅲ describes nostalgia for Utopia. The main points addressed are the concept of nostalgia, the nature of its reflection and the significance of its function. In the analysis of types of nostalgia for Utopia, the meaning and function of nostalgia are investigated by classification into restorative nostalgia and reflective nostalgia according to the nature of their awareness. Chapter Ⅳ is the most important part of this study because it contains research on the subjective consciousness of the researchers paintings. In particular, the meaning of the expression of horizon which is the main focus and the basis of the recognition of the works is analyzed ideologically, philosophically, and spatially, with a focus on the horizon in which the nostalgia for Utopia is contained. Chapter V explains the formative characteristics of the researchers artworks. It focuses on an analysis of the form, visual method, color technique, expressive technique, and symbolic themes in the expression of the horizon in the works. In conclusion, the process of producing the works has been summarized with respect to historical trends, meaning and form. The content and means of expression used in the process of producing works containing horizons that aim to communicate nostalgia for Utopia have been examined once again. Furthermore, the study has additional significance in identifying possible future directions for the researchers expressive work.
