Abstract
The death of Empress Myeongseong(1851-95), who was assassinated on August 20, 1895 (lunar calendar), was officially announced on October 15 (lunar calendar), over two months later. Begun at this point, state funerals for Empress Myeongseong proceeded through largely three stages. State funerals for Empress Myeongseong did not swerve from the overall framework of state funerals during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897). Continuity was maintained because the ideology and rituals of Confucianism were followed. As for elements of change that emerged amidst such a situation, some were extensions of changes during the latter half of the Joseon Dynasty while others stemmed from changes in government organization following the Gabo Reforms, import of Western elements, and political positions of the dominant groups. In addition, above all, changes arising from the establishment of the Empire of Korea had significant effects. A reinforcement of traditional rituals with the advent of a new era, all of this will form one axis for understanding the modern era in Korea.
