Recently, Korean companies show unusual interest in platform strategy, as the application of artificial intelligence into many areas (e.g., voice activated assistants and autonomous driving) stimulates platform wars. The punch line of the present paper is that the wellknown, winner-take-all hypothesis is overblown. The hypothesis predicts that the winner of a platform war will solidify its position and take most of the industrys profits for long. The historical analysis of Intel in the present paper shows that the hypothesis is oversimplified and untrue. Intel was merely a supplier of a key component to IBM who developed the PC platform in the 1980s, but Intel became a platform leader in the PC and the server industries. At the turn of the new millennium, Intel has continued to abide by their old approach to design and manufacture microprocessors, when the semiconductor industry faced a rising complexity by following Moores law for more than a half century. As a consequence, Intel consistently missed new big opportunities and became trapped into failures or delays in developing new technologies, leaving room for its rivals equipped with a new approach to attack Intels core business. Furthermore, its key customers, such as Apple, Google, Amazon, and Facebook, began to develop chips by themselves and reduce their reliance on Intel. This bourgeoning trend poses a serious threat to Intel, who has enjoyed fat profits from the data center business.-
