시각장애인의 데이터 탐색 및 이해를 위한 보조공학

Abstract

데이터를 탐색하고 이해하는 활동에 있어서 시각적인 매개가 많이 사용되기 때문에, 시각장애인은 그러한 활동에서 배제되기 쉽다. 시각장애인의 데이터 접근성을 증진하기 위해 많은 선행연구가 있었지만, 대부분은 단발적 솔루션을 제안하는데 그쳐, 그것이 실제 시각장애인 집단에 받아들여지는지는 미지수이다. 본 연구에서는 국내 다양한 장면에서의 시각장애인을 대상으로 인터뷰 및 탐색적 실험을 진행하여, 데이터 탐색 및 이해에 관한 국내 시각장애인 집단의 사회적 생태를 파악하였다. 이로부터 보조공학 연구가 지녀야 할 (1) 도구적 가치와 (2) 체험적 가치를 파악하고, (a) 구조화된 데이터와 (b) 비구조적 데이터를 대상으로 각각 적용하여 총 4가지 문제 디자인 공간을 도출하였다. 4개 영역에 해당하는 문제로서 (i) 2차원 표 탐색, (ii) 차트 이해, (iii) 동일 주제 문서 탐색, (iv) 웹 페이지의 첫인상 이해를 상정하고, 이를 해결하는 네 가지 솔루션 프로토타입을 개발하였다. 본 연구는 시각장애인의 데이터 이해 활동을 촉진하는 보조공학 연구의 생태학적 타당도를 평가할 기준을 정의하였다는 데 의의가 있다.

Since data exploration and comprehension tasks are heavily mediated by visual representations, visually impaired people are likely to be excluded from such activities. Although there have been many preceding studies to promote data accessibility of blind people, most of them only suggest a single-shot solution, leaving it uncertain whether it will be actually accepted by blind group. In this study, we conducted interviews and exploratory experiments with blind people in various socio-economic scenes in Korea to identify the social ecology of groups of blind people on data exploration and understanding. From this, a total of four problem-design spaces were derived, and corresponding four solution prototypes were developed: (i) two-dimensional table navigation; (ii) chart understanding; (iii) exploring similar-topic documents, and (iv) understanding the first impression of web page. The contribution of this study is in that it suggested criteria to evaluate the ecological validity of assistive tools for blind data understanding.
