L2 Writing Processes and Products of Korean EFL College Students Using Web-Based Machine Translation

Abstract

As one of tremendously growing technologies, Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has influenced people's lives more and more. In 2016, since Google and Naver applied Artificial Neural Network to their Machine Translation (NMT), Google Translate and Papago, its impact has not become negligible in the field of English education. The quality of MT has improved rapidly, and its demand will keep increasing. Along with this, one of controversial issues regarding AI technology in the context of English education is necessity of English teaching and learning. Also, in spite of increasing demand, research on its impact or its potential role as a language assistance still has been scarce in the context of English Education. In this regard, the present thesis observed eight EFL college students' processes and products of English writing using MT in order to examine these issues. The main purpose of this study is to observe behaviors of EFL Korean L2 college students utilizing MT when writing a narrative essay in English. To this end, eight participants' writing processes were recorded using a screen capture software. Also, the post-task interviews were conducted to investigate thought processes of participants during their writing in English. All the writing processes and post-task interviews were transcribed to be analyzed. Lastly, how reliable writing outcomes of the participants using MT were examined in accordance with the analytic scoring rubric. According to the results of this study, L2 English learners' writing processes using MT showed individually unique and different purposes and strategies. The most frequently observed pattern was to translate Korean into English. The writers in this study used MT to look up the expressions in English and to confirm the meaning of sentences they composed. As the results of the current study demonstrated, all the eight participants encountered the moment of self-evaluation or judgment to make every decision throughout their writing processes. This indicated the most important variable is the knowledge of English and writing as process that the writers possess. In other words, no matter how high quality of translation MT possibly provides, writers' various knowledge would eventually be reflected in the writing outcomes and would be the most significant variable that differentiates the quality of writing outcomes. Consequently, it highlights the necessity of English teaching and learning.

인공지능 기술은 우리의 삶의 여러 부분에 영향을 미치고 있는 급속도로 발전하고 있는 기술 중의 하나이다. 2016년에 구글과 네이버가 구글번역기(Google Translate)와 파파고(Papago)에 인공신경망 방식을 도입한 이후 번역기의 성능이 빠르게 향상되고 있다. 실제로 웹 기반 기계 번역기의 수요가 증가하고 있으며 영어 학습자들도 예외일 수 없다. 이에 따라 제2외국어 학습자들의 작문에 영향을 미칠 것으로 예상되고 있다. 또한 인공지능기술 자체를 포함하여 인공지능 번역기에 대한 여러가지의 논의 가운데, 영어교사의 필요성과 더 나아가서는 영어교육 자체의 필요성에 대한 논의가 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 제2언어 학습자들의 번역기를 사용한 영어 작문 과정과 결과의 분석을 통해서 영어교육의 관점에서 번역기의 잠재적 영향과 영어교육의 필요성에 대한 논의에 대한 답을 하는 것에 있다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 구글번역기와 파파고를 사용한 영어 작문과정을 담은 화면 녹화 자료, 과업 수행 후 면담을 통해 수집한 구두자료, 그리고 기타 배경 자료를 질적으로 분석하였다. 그리고 참여자들이 언제, 어떻게, 그리고 왜 번역기를 사용하는지를 관찰하여 각 참여자들이 보여주는 행동적인 특성에 따라 분류하였다. 또한 그 과정을 통해서 작성된 영어 작문 결과가 얼마나 쓸모 있는지를 채점표에 따라 점수화 하였다. 연구 결과, 참여자들은 작문 과정 동안 각기 다른 목적에 따른 행동과 작문과 번역기의 사용에서 여러 전략들을 사용하였다. 공통적으로 가장 빈번하게 보이는 행동은 한국어를 영어로 번역하는 것이었으며, 잘 모르는 표현이나 본인의 영어 작문을 확인하기 위한 목적을 위하여 사용하는 경우가 가장 많았다. 이에 더불어, 작문을 과정으로(Writing as a process), 절차에 따라 수행한 참여자는 본인의 영어 실력보다 뛰어난 결과를 얻었다. 그러나 여타 참여자들은 본인의 영어실력과 비슷한 결과를 보여주었다. 또한 본 연구에 참여한 작문 참여자들은 모두 자기평가 또는 판단 (self-evaluation or judgment)과정을 작문을 하는 매 순간 마주해야 한다는 것이 드러났다. 이는 번역기를 사용하여 작문을 하는 과정에서도 글쓴이가 가지고 있는 여러가지 지식이 작문결과를 다르게 만드는 가장 중요한 변수가 됨을 보여주며, 번역기의 질적 향상에도 불구하고 좋은 영어 작문결과를 얻기 위해서는 영어교육과 학습이 필수적이라는 점을 시사한다.
