Abstract
Crowdfunding is a new way of trading and investing. It provides the funding creators with an easy and secure way to obtain funding from the general public, while the funding sponsors could get innovative products or services which do not exist in the market, extra benefits such as price discounts, or higher returns than other financial products. Crowdfunding could lead to a virtuous cycle of social resources. However, considering the high risk of crowdfunding, the crowdfunding market must be based on proper regulations for protecting consumers.
Therefore, this study first explored the overall market and regulation of rewards-based crowdfunding and investment-based crowdfunding. Then according to the survey, it examined the consumers' participation in the crowdfunding market and participation intention to the rewards-based and investment-based crowdfunding market. This study also analyzed the factors influencing the participation intention of rewards-based and investment-based crowdfunding. Finally, this study draws the following conclusions.
First, although the market size of rewards-based crowdfunding and investment-based crowdfunding is growing day by day, the rewards-based crowdfunding does not have specific legal regulations for it, while the investment-based crowdfunding is regulated through the Capital Markets Act.
Second, according to the survey, there are 55.8% of the 758 respondents had participated in crowdfunding, and the rewards-based crowdfunding is most popular. At the same time, Social Network Service(SNS) plays an essential role in crowdfunding.
Third, the consumers who had participated in the crowdfunding are younger and more educated than those who had not. Meanwhile, they also show a higher innovation tendency, investment tendency, and social man tendency.
Forth, men show higher intention to participate in rewards-based crowdfunding than women. Consumers with more average monthly spending show higher intention to participate in investment-based crowdfunding, but it is limited to consumers with average monthly spending less than 200 million won.
Finally, the factors that influence consumers' intention to participate in rewards-based crowdfunding are consumers' innovation tendency, investment tendency, inherent social man tendency, and trust in rewards-based crowdfunding platforms. Meanwhile, the factors that influence consumers' intention to participate in investment-based crowdfunding are consumers' innovation tendency, investment tendency, and trust in investment-based crowdfunding platforms.
According to the conclusions above, this study suggests the following implications for the crowdfunding market. First of all, consumers participating in rewards-based crowdfunding play the role of lead consumers, investors, and social men. So, as a way to revitalize the rewards-based crowdfunding market, funding creators should pay close attention to providing innovative and creative projects, and funding platforms should provide the funding supporters a better way to participate in the production and investment process of the funding project. Then, consumers participating in investment-based crowdfunding play the role of investors. In order to increase consumers' intention to participate in the investment-based crowdfunding market, it is necessary to pay attention to the profit rate of the funding project. It could be realized by increasing the success rate of the investment-based crowdfunding and ensuring stable management after funding. So, the funding platforms should improve the ability to pre-screen the funding creators and make sure that only competent creators remain in the market. In the end, since trust in crowdfunding platforms influence the intention to participate in the rewards-based and investment-based crowdfunding, the platforms should solve the information asymmetry problem between the funding creators and supporters. Furthermore, the government should supervise the platforms' performance.
Further research is needed to study the effect of consumers' trust in crowdfunding creators. Besides, investment-based crowdfunding could be divided into different types, so it is necessary to conduct more detailed research.
