고든 파스크의 감각적 사이버네틱스

Abstract

이 논문은 영국의 사이버네틱스 이론가이자 예술가, 기업가, 발명가인 고든 파스크(Gordon Pask, 1928~1996)가 1950년대와 1960년대에 수행한 일련의 작업들에 대한 역사적인 분석을 시도한다. 파스크는 다양한 주제의 연구를 수행한 과학자이자 2차 사이버네틱스의 흐름을 주도한 사이버네틱스 이론가였을 뿐만 아니라 음악, 연극, 건축, 엔터테인먼트, 조형 예술, 디자인에 이르는 다양한 창조적 문화 영역에서 왕성하게 활동한 예술가이기도 했다. 이처럼 사이버네틱스 과학사와 문화사 모두에서 중요한 위치를 점하는 인물임에도 불구하고, 파스크 작업의 의의에 관한 기존 연구는 아직 미진한 상태이다. 그러한즉 이 논문은 파스크의 작업을 사이버네틱스의 역사라는 맥락 안에 위치짓고자 하며, 이로부터 사이버네틱스의 역사에 관한 기존의 이해를 재고하는 데에 기여하고자 한다.

이 논문은 과학, 예술, 발명의 상이한 영역들을 넘나드는 파스크의 포트폴리오를 관통하는 개념으로 감각적인 것의 모티프를 제시한다. 파스크에게 있어 감각의 개념은 심리학적 견지에 국한될 수 없는 것으로, 커뮤니케이션, 엔터테인먼트, 사회적 실천, 섹슈얼리티, 심미주의 등의 다양한 맥락들에 결부된다. 더 나아가 감각적인 것에 대한 파스크의 탐구는 인간 아닌 것들에게까지 확장되며, 이를 통해 감각은 인간과 기계 사이의 상호작용을 매개하는 개념으로 자리매김한다. 논문은 이 같은 파스크의 독특한 입장이 한편으로는 그의 개인적인 문제의식에 기인하는 것임을 보이면서도, 다른 한편으로는 1950년대와 1960년대 영국에서 광범위하게 일어난 사이버네틱스와 여러 문화 영역들 사이의 상호작용이라는 맥락 안에서 가능했던 것임을 주장할 것이다. 상술한 바와 같은 분석을 통해 이 논문은 사이버네틱스의 이론적 유산에 대한 현대 이론가들의 재평가 및 수용의 맥락을 보다 구체적으로 이해하는 데에 필요한 논의의 기반을 제공하려 한다.

This thesis attempts to make a historical analysis on the works of the British cybernetician, artist, entrepreneur and inventor Gordon Pask (1928~1996) done in the period of 1950s and 1960s. He was a scientist who pioneered an intellectual movement called the second-order cybernetics; and he was also an artist who was active in the various fields of the creative works such as music, theatre, architecture, entertainment, installation and design. Although Pask was an important figure in history of cybernetics and of cybernetic culture as well, there have been only a few historical studies dealing with him. Hence this study aims to centextualize his works in the history of cybernetics.

Combining the elements of various scientific and aesthetic activities, Pask developed a unique conceptual motif of the sensuous which exceeds mere psychological sensory perception. By associating sensory perception with various contexts such as communication, entertainment, sociality, sexuality and aestheticism, here argues, Pask explored the possibility of sense not only of human but also of machines. Moreover this thesis shows that such conceptual motif had grown from personal concerns Pask had; but it was the cultural atmosphere of 1950s and 1960s Britain that allowed active interactions between cybernetics and other fields. Through the analyses mentioned above, this study is about to give a cornerstone of understanding the recent discussions on the theoretical and philosophical legacy of cybernetics.
