Abstract
This paper aims to compare the versions of Makyungcho(馬經抄), an equine veterinary book. There are two types of the book: block book and manuscript. The block books, which are small size suitable to be carried around, are conserved at the Museum of the Daegu National University of Education and National Hangeul Museum. The manuscript version of the book is conserved at the National Library of Korea. Although the version stored at the Daegu National University of Education has been introduced earlier, it has been difficult to accurately identify the actual literature as half of the book was missing. However, we were able to fully review the block book conserved at the National Hangeul Museum, which was kept in good conditions. While the manuscript version stored at the National Library of Korea was transcribed based on the block book version, this has never been reviewed.
The results of the studies are as follows:
First, it is highly likely that both block book and manuscript versions were made based on the original version written in Chinese characters. While this version written in Chinese characters is estimated to be similar to the Makyungchojibunhae(馬經抄集諺解) written in the 17th century to a large extent, yet there is also a high possibility that they are not entirely the same. This is because some Chinese characters written in the transcribed version is different from those written in Makyungchojibunhae. However, the Korean annotation of the Chinese classic is similar for both block book and manuscript versions.
Secondly, the block book can be seen to have been written in the first half of the nineteenth century, while the manuscript versionis from the latter half of the 19th century. Seeing from the fact that the manuscript version was transcribed in the book calendar of year 1855 (Hampung 5 year) and had a seal of the Japanese Government General of Koreas Library dated 1933 (Sohwa 8 year), it is highly likely that it was transcribed between the year 1856 and 1933. As the block book was published before the manuscript version, which is estimated to be from the late 19th century, the former is estimated to have been made in the first half of the 19th century.
Thirdly, the block book and manuscript both reflects Korean characteristics of the 19th century. When compared to other literatures of the same period, however, they tend to be more conservative.
