Abstract
This thesis examines the problem of the constitution of subject in Kant's philosophy, based on Foucault's Kantianism, which reinterprets Kant's enlightenment as the self-constitution of subject through the historical critique of the present. This work has three major aspects: first, to reformulate the enlightenment, which is considered to have lost its historical efficacy, into a concept of contemporary significance; second, to connect the reformulation of enlightenment with the reinterpretation of Kant's philosophy in terms of subject theory; and third, to examine the trajectory of Foucault's Kantianism which reads Kant in the way mentioned above and its relation to Kant's philosophy itself.
In general, enlightenment is construed as the process by which the light of reason radiating from the subject of enlightenment obtains the rational knowledge by illuminating the world (enlightenment as cognition) or produces another enlightenment by enlightening others who are not enlightened yet (enlightenment as politics). However, Kant's enlightenment, most of all, refers to the relation of subject neither to the world nor the other but to itself, hence self-enlightenment. In Foucault's interpretation, this means that the subject engages in the process of the constitution of itself, so that it becomes self-constitution as an autonomous work (enlightenment as ethics). This reconceptualization of enlightenment as the subject's self-constitution, in conjunction with the concepts of power and governmentality in Foucault, which allow us to identify the place where the most critical problems of today's society are raised as 'subject(ification),' opens the way to understanding enlightenment not as the theme of historical investigations but as the contemporary way of resistance.
Defining a subject from the point of view of its constitution or production means that it is not pre-given or pre-supposed, that is, the problems of the subject cannot be addressed except in light of subjectification. This view is a primary condition on which to justify still talking about subject even after massive criticism of the concept of subject, which has now become a theoretical 'cliché.' The main point of criticism of subject is that the theory and the politics centering on the subject assume a subjectivity with a pre-given nature and a self-identity, and grants a superiority as origin to the subject so defined. Foucault's reinterpretation of Kant goes hand in hand with the problematization of self-identical and original subjects. Thus this dissertation investigates the constitution of subject in Kant's philosophy not in terms of self-identical subject but of subjectification which involves heterogeneity as a fundamental element and therefore does not result in a stable composition of identity.
In Kant's philosophy, the subject of enlightenment is the subject using reason publicly. The public use of reason is to use reason as a Weltbürger. The subject form of Weltbürger involves a constant movement of de-identification in that it cannot be equated with any specific social identity, and requires continuous self-constitution of subject in that the subject form is only established by using reason publicly, not pre-defined. The public use of reason by the Weltbürger in this sense is the same as 'an enlarged way of thinking' (eine erweiterte Denkungsart), which means to accept the 'parallax' resulting from the coexistence of a multitude of heterogeneous judgments as the core of the use of reason. In this sense, the subject of enlightenment is the subject that carries out the movement of self-constitution by taking its relationship to heterogeneous diversity as an essential moment.
If enlightenment is not a restricted theme confined to Kant's historico-political works, but the fundamental problematic that determines Kant's philosophy as a whole, it should be possible to explain critical philosophy, generally recognized as the substance of Kant's philosophy, from the perspective of redefined enlightenment, i.e., in terms of the non-identical self-constitution of subject. This theme can be considered in terms of relations or arrangements of different faculties that constitute the subject.
Critical philosophy is about building relationships of heterogeneous-natured faculties. The answers to Kant's leading questions, such as "What can I know," "What must I do," and "What may I hope," are presented in diverse combinations of those abilities. In other words, Kant's critical philosophy is a theory about the internal constitution of subject in the sense that all philosophical problems, such as cognition, ethics, aesthetics, and religion, are formulated as a matter of constructing relations between faculties.
In Kant's critical philosophy, the heterogeneity of faculties is never eliminated, and thus the constitution of critical philosophical subject does not lead to stable self-identity. The doctrine of transcendental illusion where reason proves to be the source of ineradicable illusions, the deontological ethics that refers to the divide of rational animal, and the theories of the sublime and the genius which analyze effects of 'violence' that reason and imagination exert on each other ― these are scenes revealing that Kant's critical philosophical subject cannot be understood in terms of self-identity. In this sense, it has a connection with enlightenment defined as the self-constitution of subject whose nucleus is the relation with heterogeneity. And here, autonomy is conceived as governing relations with and between the heterogeneous faculties within us in a way that accepts the irremovability of their heterogeneity.
Although the reinterpretation of Kant's enlightenment and critical philosophy so far discussed is based on Foucault's work, Foucault himself does not address in detail the constitution of subject in critical philosophy, the relationship between enlightenment and critical philosophy. Foucault defines himself as a Kantian in the sense that he considers the whole work he carried out as a critique, which means to interrogate the conditions of possibility of what is deemed self-evident and necessary. Nevertheless, he also intended to transform Kantianism by shifting critique from transcendental domain to historical one, and in so far as that is the case, the discourse of Kant's critical philosophy, based on the transcendental subject, is not at the heart of Foucault's Kantianism.
Foucault historicizes Kant's critique and, with the historico-critical methodology thus derived, criticizes the transcendental subject underlying Kant's critical philosophy. And, with the problematic of enlightenment as critical ontology of ourselves, which is established through such a historical critique of the transcendental subject, he reverts to Kant. In short, Foucault starts from Kant to criticize Kant and then returns to Kant. The trajectory of Foucauldian Kantianism is marked by these 'deflections' in relationship to Kant.
In conclusion, the real union of enlightenment and Kant's critical philosophy from the point of view of Foucauldian Kantianism seems to require another 'deflection' Foucault himself did not have in mind. It is the invention of a new theory of faculties that connects with Foucault's historico-critical thought an analysis of the heterogeneous relations of faculties and the constitution of non-identical subject, which is carried out by this thesis based upon Deleuze's reading of Kant. This work, which needs a 'synthesis' of Foucault's Kantianism and Deleuze's Kantianism, should be one that can explain the functions, relations, and limits of our faculties not in terms of givenness but of historical production.
