Abstract
This paper aims to reveal an inclination for fictionality in Yun, Chi-hos early diaries. It can be said that confessional forms have appeared since the period of Chinese writing. In there Yun spoke his internal life such as sexual discourses. By doing so, he could manage to carry out his self-discipline. After the diary writer exiled to the U.S., vitalizing tendency toward fictionality was more strengthened as time passed. He sometimes adopted epistolary style in his diaries and occasionally constructed fictional narrative forms through association with his experiences. In that process, his writing has developed various rhetorical expressions(e.g. simile, metaphor, rhyming couplet, contrast, homonym, analogy etc.) which are not general in the diary writing. But after he came back to China as a missionary, his diaries were no longer confessional but changed to be argumentative and the features of rhetorical expression altered to enlightening devices.
