Abstract
The paper primarily examines the collection of works of Lee, Young-yu(李英裕, 1743 ∼1804) titled Unsomango(雲巢謾藁) to identify his entire life and consciousness. Lee is a descendant of Lee, Yi-myeong(李頤命) and Lee, Gi-ji(李器之), who were poisoned to death by the King at the time of Sinimsawha(辛壬士禍), and has been considered an important figure in the literature history. His collection of writings Unsomango, a manuscript consisting of five volumes, is housed by the Gyujanggak Institute of Korean Studies at Seoul National University. His life was periodically traced based on the title or the sexagenary cycle recorded at the end of the collection.
His noble birth allowed him to enter government service without a civil service literary examination. However, his strong partisan coloring triggered criticism of him in his official life. Accordingly, he failed to exert his government power. He has built a living space around the house built to mourn at the grave of his parents during the mourning period on the family burial ground which was inherited from his ancestors. He had a house on a tranquil farm around Okgok (玉谷) and recorded the space of his life. Jebalmun(題跋文), one of his proses, provides clues to his consciousness. The writer expressed his commitment to maintaining great pride as a descendant of a prestigious family, respecting antient sages, and inheriting the family spirit, as a great-grandchild of Lee, Yi-myeong who was a prime minister with the faction called Noronsadaesin(老論 四大臣), and the daughters great-grandchild of Kim, Chang-jib(金昌集).
The progress of the research on Unsomango is far from enough, considering its potential literature value while its existence and importance have been recognized by all in academia. This is mainly due to the fact that the collection is composed only of proses, which are suitable to illuminate a particular event or opinion but are difficult to reveal the whole life or trace. Therefore, it is clear that only in-depth analysis and research can reveal his value more clearly. Hopefully, this fragmentary study will contribute to the understanding of Lee, Young-yu and his Unsomango.
