Abstract

Since the late 1990s, many ancient books have been computerized with state-led information service projects. The site of each eupji(local gazetteer) in the late Joseon Dynasty is provided not only with the lifting work but also with the original image. Contrary to expectations, however, the government lacks systematic and comprehensive research into the entire town area, and the materials published by the city government or cultural center are not properly utilized. No study noted that most of eupji of Jeolla and Gyeongsang provinces in the late 18th century, housed by Gyujanggak Institute of Korean Studies at Seoul National University, was originally a second-class manuscript. This article attempted to be tangibleized as part of a search for a genealogy of eupji in the late Joseon Dynasty. There were four projects to compile nationwide eupji in the late 18th century, 1759(Yeongjo 33), 1768(Yeongjo 44), and 1775(Yeongjo 51). Some municipalities were organized in 1786(Jeongjo 10) and 1793(Jeongjo 17) through Gyeongsangdo-eupji and Honam-eupji. Around 1786 a project was carried out to compile provincial-level supports in Jeolla Province. So in the late 18th century, there were six different types of eupji left behind. There were Yeojidoseo types, Yeojidoseo types of Gyeongsang Province, and Daegu-eupji types, Yeojidoseo+α types, Honam-eupji types as well as Dongguk-Yeoji-Seungram types. Honam-eupji is a type of town that comes out as a result of harmonizing interests between local government and local elite, reflecting the intention of compiling Haedongeupji. Honam-eupji has many unique texts that have not been identified so far, and it is worth its value in that it reflects the situation of each town in Jeolla-do at the end of the 18th century.
