Abstract

The purpose of the civil service examination held during the Chos?n Dynasty was to select civil officials for the government. The preparation process for the examination begins with studying Confucian classics, history books, and various texts on sentences. Especially, Kwamun(科文) was a writing equipped with specific style that required professional learning. Moreover, since the primary goal of the examination was centered on passing the exam itself, it required more efficient learning process. For these reasons, various practical examination aids were published to help prepare for the examination. This paper examines the examination aids produced in the Chos?n Dynasty to understand the preparation process for the state examination during the Chos?n period. In particular, what kind of text books were studied by the candidates for the examination and how the books were produced and circulated during the period will be examined.
