빌렘 플루서의 기술이미지 이론을 통한 미디어 교육의 의미 재고찰

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 현대 사회에서 일상적이고 근본적인 삶의 조건으로 자리 잡은 영상 미디어의 교육적 의미가 무엇인지 고찰하는 것에 있다. 이때 영상 미디어란 장치(device), 플랫폼(platform), 콘텐츠(contents) 등과 같은 유•무형의 미디어를 총칭하는 개념이다. 미디어에 대한 기존의 교육적 이해는, 다양한 미디어가 서로 다른 형식을 취하고 있다는 이유에서 그것들에 대해 상이한 접근 방식(예컨대, 디지털•인터넷•스마트 등)을 취해왔다. 또한 텍스트 언어에서 차용한 리터러시(literacy, 문해력) 개념을 미디어와 연결한 미디어 리터러시, 디지털 리터러시 등과 같은 능력이 핵심으로 강조되어왔다. 하지만 본 연구에서는 체코 출신의 미디어 이론가 빌렘 플루서가 제안한 기술이미지 개념을 통해 현대 영상 미디어 전체를 관통하는 본성을 포착함으로써, 기술이미지의 특성에 기초한 영상 미디어의 교육적 함의를 밝히고자 한다. 플루서는 기술이미지가 이미지, 텍스트에 이어 인간이 만들어낸 세 번째 상징체계(코드)라고 말하는데, 이 세 가지 코드는 각각 상이한 차원의 의미 구조를 가지고 있으며 그 특징 또한 상이하다. 따라서 기술이미지의 등장으로 인간은 기존과는 전혀 새로운 차원의 의사소통을 하게 되었으며, 이는 인간의 인식•경험•가치 판단•행위 모두를 망라하는 총체적이고 존재론적인 변화로까지 이어졌다. 플루서가 이와 같은 기술이미지 개념을 통해 포착하고 싶었던 것은 궁극적으로 인간의 자유, 그중에서도 기술이미지가 도래한 탈산업사회에서 유희하는 존재로서의 인간의 자유다. 기술이미지란 장치를 통해 만들어지는 상징으로, 이때 장치의 핵심은 자동화된 프로그램에 있다. 따라서 기술이미지를 다루는 인간 역시도 자동화된 장치 프로그램에 의해 제약을 받는다. 하지만 플루서가 보기에 그런 장치 프로그램에 저항하는 모습이야말로 탈산업사회 인간의 자유이자 유희이며, 이것이 바로 미디어 교육이 추구해야 할 새로운 목표인 것이다. 역사적으로 인간의 자유는 언제나 중요한 교육적 가치로 여겨져 왔기 때문에, 플루서가 추구했던 탈산업사회 인간의 자유 역시도 교육적으로 중요한 의미를 가진다. 특히 플루서가 탈산업사회 인간의 존재 방식을 유희하는 인간으로 설명하고 있다는 점에서, 그의 이론은 오늘날 삶의 조건으로서의 미디어를 교육적으로 이해하는 데 중요한 실마리를 제공한다. 우리가 경험적으로 알 수 있듯이, 어린이•청소년 세대가 추구하는 삶의 의미와 행복은 영상 미디어라는 삶의 조건과 밀접하게 관련되어 있으며, 따라서 그들이 삶의 의미를 추구하는 방식은 기성세대의 그것과는 확연히 다르다. 그러므로 새로운 미디어 교육이 추구해야 할 방향 역시 오늘날의 새로운 존재 방식에 걸맞은 새로운 관점에서 정립될 필요가 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this research is to seek the educational implications of media, which has become usual and fundamental condition for the life of human being. Here, the concept of Media includes all kinds of tangible or intangible things like devices, platforms, and contents. The existing educational understanding of media has taken various approach to the different media because we regarded that every media has its own form and characteristic. And this approach emphasized abilities such as media literacy and digital literacy that link the concept of literacy borrowed from text language with media. However, I try to understand the nature of media as the technical image which is a concept proposed by Vilém Flusser, who was a media theorist from Czech. Through his theory, I also try to explain the educational implication of media as the technical image. Flusser said the technical image is the third symbol (or code) human made after image and text, and these three codes have different structures of meaning and natures. Therefore, with the advent of technical images, humans have communicated at a whole new level, and this has led to a holistic and ontological change that encompasses all of human episteme, experience, judgment, and action. Eventually Flusser wants to find the freedom of human being, especially the freedom of human being who is Homo Ludens in the post-industrial society with the technical image. The technical image is made by apparatus, and program is the core of the apparatus. So all human beings who uses the technical image is conditioned by the program within apparatus. But to struggle against the program within apparatus is the freedom and play of human being in the post-industrial society, and this should be the new goal of media education. Because the freedom of humanity is always regarded as critical value of education, the freedom of human being in the post-industrial society also has critical implications for education. Flusser explained that the new way of human being is Homo Ludens, so his theory teaches how we educationally understand media as the condition of the life of human being. As we know, younger generations have different ways from older generations to seek the value of their life or well-being. Their ways to seek happiness are related to media intimately. Therefore, Flussers theory is helpful to us to understand the new environment and conditions of life made by the technical image and to set up a new meaningful media education under these conditions.
