Abstract

Metaethical naturalism is the claim that every normative property is the same property as a certain natural property. Metaethical non-naturalism is the claim that every normative property is different from any natural property even when the natural property in question is necessarily coextensive with it. To provide an example, let us suppose that, necessarily, an action has the normative property of being right if and only if it has the natural property of maximizing happiness. The identity between the property of being right and the property of maximizing happiness is then what metaethical naturalists would recognize and metaethical non-naturalists would deny.

In On What Matters, Derek Parfit has presented what he calls the Triviality Objection in order to defend metaethical non-naturalism against metaethical naturalism. The objection can be understood as a substitution-instance of the following argument-schema, in which we replace F with maximizing happiness and G with being right:

(A) If the property F is identical with the property G, then if Fx, then Gx is not a substantive claim.
(B) If Fx, then Gx is a substantive claim.
(C) Therefore, the property F is not identical with the property G.

But (A) is certainly implausible if we consider another substitution-instance of the same sentence-schema, in which we replace F with being composed of H2O and G with being water. Therefore, the following question naturally arises: why should we accept (A) in the case of happiness - right pair while rejecting it in the case of H2O - water pair? We may call this natural doubt about (A) the doubt from the analogy of scientific discoveries.

In this paper, I defend Parfits Triviality Objection against the analogy of scientific discoveries by revealing a difference between the normative predicates such as being right and natural kind predicates such as being water, a difference that does make the acceptance of (A) compelling in the case of maximizing happiness - being right pair.

I first introduce the notion of a PREDICATE ACCOMPANYING AN ASSOCIATED PROPERTY, which can roughly be characterized as a predicate that denotes a certain property not directly but indirectly by exploiting its actual co-extensiveness with some other, distinct property. I then justify the following three theses one by one:

(1) A substitution-instance of (A) is false if and only if the predicate G is a predicate accompanying an associated property and the property F is identical with the property G.
(2) The predicate being water is a predicate accompanying an associated property.
(3) The predicate being right is not a predicate accompanying an associated property.

(1) and (2) will jointly explain why (A) is false in the case of the H2O - water pair, while (1) and (3) will jointly assure us that (A) is true in the case of the happiness - right pair. In other words, I identify the mechanism which falsifies a substitution-instance of (A) and which lies in H2O - water pair but not in happiness - right pair. The analogy of scientific discoveries will then lose its appeal.

I then finish the paper by examining the significance which my work may have with regard to some other existing philosophical works. Those existing works include Parfits own response to the analogy based on a rather obscure thought that there is an explicit gap in what is meant by predicates such as being water, as well as G.E. Moores Open Question Argument and David Chalmers Zombie Argument.
