문화연구: 기획의 역사, 그 구성체의 시대

Abstract

본 기조 연설문은 문화연구의 기획이 급진적 맥락주의, 보다 정확하게는 복합국면주의를 실천하는 구체적인 비판적, 분석적 실천이 되어야 한다고 주장 한다. 특수한 사회 현실 속에서 즉각적인 정치적 필요성이 무엇이며, 그것의 핵심에는 어떠한 이슈가 있는지, 그것과 관련된 문제들은 실제 역사 속에서 어떻게 작동하는지의 문제들이 문화연구의 핵심적인 관심사가 되어야 한다. 미국 문화연구의 즉각적 맥락은 국가, 경제, 문화 간의 관계 자체가 새롭게 재배치되면서 변화하고 있는 상황으로서, 나는 이러한 복합국면을 근대성 자체를 두고 경합을 벌이고 있는 다양한 실천들 간의 위치의 전쟁으로 본다. 이러한 사회구성체의 총체성과 총체성의 복합국면을 염두에 두고, 미국의 문화 연구는 다양한 맥락에 존재하는 사건들과 구성체들 간의 접합 양상과 그 형태， 그들 간에 일어나는 위치의 전쟁을 분석하고 근대성을 변형시키려는 투쟁 속 에서 문화나 담론이 가지는 효과 및 위치는 무엇인지를 밝혀내는 정치적인 기획을 수행해야 한다. 이러한 일을 수행할 수 있는 한 가지 실용적인 방법으로서, 경제학 및 정치학의 기획이 현실을 구성하는 방식을 분석함으로써 경제, 시장, 국가의 관계성, 상황 의존성, 담론성을 밝혀내는 작업을 제시한다.

This keynote address argues that the project of cultural studies needs to seek a radical contextualism, more accurately coniuncturalism, developing a critical analysis of a concrete situation. The project of cultural studies needs to analyze the changes and struggles in/of the various levels of social formations, the ways in which a set of economic, political and ideological practices are articulated with other practices in (a) social formation(s). Cultural Studies in America needs to analyze the reconfiguration of the relations among its politics, economies and cultures that has been taking place in America for half a century. Recognizing the changes as an war of positions among competing conceptions over the configurations of modernity, Cultural Studies should find ways to interrogate how the political, economic and cultural are articulated both as difference and as a totality in their coniunctural specificity. As a practical way to take up such a task, I suggest that cultural studies should not only reveal the ways in which the disciplines of economics and political science define the realities of the economies and politics, but also reconstitute the objects of these disciplines as relational, contingent and discursive.
