Emma에 관하여

Abstract

일반적으로 Jane Austen의 걸작으로 인정되고 있는 Emma는 Persuasion을 제외하고 그녀의 어떤 작품보다 짧은 시간에 쓰여졌다는 사실은 주목할 일이다. 즉 그것은 1814년 1월 21일에 직수되어 1815년 3월 에 완성되고 9월 에 출판되었다. 이 작품이, 쓰여지기 이전에 이미 그녀의 마음 속에서 그것이 성장해 왔었는지는 확실히 알 수 없으나, 오래 계속되는 작품의 형성기를 겪음으로서 그 내용이 풍부해졌으리라는 것은 쉽게 상상할 수 있다. 그녀는 섭정황태자(Prince Regent)집안의 도서 관장인 Mr. Clarke에게 다음과 같은 펀지를 썼다. I am very strongly haunted with the idea that to those readers who have preferred Pride and Prejudice' it will appear inferior in wit, and to those who have preferred Mansfield Park' very inferior in good sense.
