Abstract
This study intended to overcome limitations of the industrial relations literature that primarily focuses on the analysis at the national or industry level. Instead, this looks into the formation and operational mechanisms of firm-level industrial relations systems. The aim of this study is to clarify what kind of IR systems are formed inside the firms that produce a good outcome and which internal factors of the firm affect the diversification of types of IR systems. The difference of this study from other studies is that the level of analysis is the firm not the nation nor the industry. And the study is not the normative study to find out what is the desirable IR systems' but a study aimed to establish the procedure of the formation and the mechanisms of the IR systems of the real firms executing a good performances. This is a case study that includes the largest three companies in Korean shipbuilding industry. They, also, are the largest three in the world shipbuilding industry. At first, I executed the individual case studies of the three firms' IR systems and compared their transformation later.
