- Abstract
- This study was aimed at evaluating human resource management (HRM) systems in Korean firms. To do this. evaluation criteria were derived from three major factors considered to be important for effective HRM systems: principles of HRM. characteristics of the system. and environmental changes. Five evaluation factors--strategic orientation. development orientation. rationality. openness/participativeness. and implementation effectiveness--were derived which include 26 items. The study employed the questionnaire survey method. The sample was 252 large-size companies in Korea. For data analysis. descriptive statistics and ANOVA were used. The results were negative: HRM systems in Korean firms turned out to be basically ineffective. More specifically. nine out of 26 evaluation items showed considerably low level in such factors as strategic orientation. development orientation. rationality. and openness/participativeness. Practical implications and suggestions for more effective management of human resources were proposed.
