Abstract

This paper reviews the empirical literature on the social systems of production - labour and industrial relations in particular - and it's effects upon the competitiveness of business firms. The paper analyses the repercussions of the opening of national border and increased capital mobility on industrial relations. whilst pointing out that much of the available information on this matter is still far from clear. The paper stresses that the maneuverability of States seems to have been considerably reduced whilst. at the same time. the State is being increasingly called upon everywhere to restore social cohesion which has been seriously undermined by movements of exclusion resulting from market forces. The increasing autonomy of the enterprise and the individualization of labour relations. as well as the increased role of the enterprise as a spur to economic growth and job creation. clearly shows the need to pay greater attention to developments at the level of the individual enterprise. Hence. the social systems of productions and the institutional arrangements are increasingly being regulated by multi-lateral agreements consequenced by the rapid progress of economic globalization. The paper concludes that in order for firms in korea to compete effectively at the world market. it has little choices but to make serious efforts to move its economy and the social systems of production toward one organized along more flexible principles.
